I purchased my Tacoma about 8 months ago and a few weeks after buying it I noticed a ticking sound at idle when in drive or reverse and the engine at operating temperature. In park or neutral there was no noticeable tick nor was there a tick when it was warming up.

I didn't think much of it but over time it's been getting worse. Maybe it's because I've been obsessing over it but I had a mechanic look at it and he couldn't figure out what it was but didn't think it was rod knock. I had the timing belt water pump and pulleys changed since then and still the sound is there.

Today I pulled all fan belts off and ran it for a while and couldn't hear that tick. I did hear valves and or injectors but not the tick from before. Replaced just the alternator belt and sound came back but not as loud. Replaced other two belts and sound is back at full force. Seems like now its there even in park or neutral when before it was only in drive or reverse.

I've read that over tightening fan belts can cause premature wear on bearings. Not sure if it that or maybe something else like a cracked flex plate which a can't get a good look at even after removing the inspection plate. Any recommendations?

2000 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner 3.6L Automatic Transmission with 232000 miles. Purchased it with 227000 miles.

It seemed as if mine started right after i changedthe water pump and timing belt. However i used a napa water pump and napa timing belt. I did not changethe tensioner or the idler bearings. Anyone else notice the similar?

Just had the same problem, suttle ticking sound. Then after driving back to Maine from Countryfest this past weekend, I got the truck unpacked and went and inside to relax for a bit. The GF wanted to go get some ice cream, didn't get further than .5 mile before it sounded like hell, ticking was horribly loud and I lost power. Short story long, ended up being a loose spark plug. Damn thing had backed itself right out (middle plug driver's side, no clue what #). Now no more ticking at all like I had before. Might've been the wire shortnig out against the inside of the spark plug cylinder making that sound?

Hossmaster: Have you changed your timing belt / water pump recently? Mine was noticed shortly after I did that procedure. I have heard it is from over tightened drive belts.

What coolant did you replace it with when you did the water pump? Did you notice the thump shortly after the water pump change?

I had the timing belt changed along with water pump pulleys and seals. Nothing changed. I'm just going to drive it till it breaks I suppose.
