Hey guys, after reading many a thread of how we should only use toyota or zurtech, I just wanted to let everybody know I used different coolant than that of toyota or zurtech and am happy to report my truck did not explode or burst into flames. Note: I have thoroughly flushed the system prior to the new coolant. The truck is a 2002 prerunner 3.4l v6.

(This is not saying that Toyota's or Zurtech's coolant is bad and that you should not use it.)

I used to bite lead fishing weights before I started carrying extra pliers on fishing trips

so since I didn't get lead poisoning or cancer, I will tell everyone that eating lead is totally fine

I promise you nothing in the Tacoma will blow up or break if you use something other than Toyota or Zurtech coolant. lol

"Krazie".... he accidentally drained his tranny instead of his engine oil, then he put ATF into his coolant reservoir.

And to the OP, some coolants are compatible, some are not. The fact that the system was flushed takes care of any coolant intercompatibility concerns.
The only remaining concern is compatibility of the coolant with the engine's various systems.
Dexcool was horrible stuff and ate intake manifold and even head gaskets. Only other problem with Dexcool was if it was contaminated with water or a different coolant it would tend to gel.

I know I can use other coolants lol, it just seems like the vast majority stick with the Toyota or Zurtech coolants, just thought I'd live on the edge and use different coolant lol.

37,000 miles and counting on the GM red coolant I put in it when I did the T-belt.

Um, at GM the dexcool was all we used, and it came in concentrated form, with the instructions saying to add water. How could one contaminate mixed dexcool with water, if water is 50% of the mixture? lol. Unless you are using a different water than I do. Perhaps from the West coats instead of the east coast? ( sorry, I just HAD to...lmao)

What I was told by a GM guy about 10 years ago. Didn't make sense, but the main concern was compatibilities with other coolants, and apparently air in the system could cause issues and was one reason they moved to the closed expansion tank system.

And yes, apparently many of the issues have been resolved with the modern "red" Dexcool.

Yes, Dexcool was never compatible with other coolants. Air did cause a FEW issues, but not very common. I just had to laugh about being contaminated by water. lol.
