Has any one shortened the automatic shifter? Not sure how hard it would be to take it apart, cut and tap it down.... I tried the search, but it was all for the manual?? Anyone? Bueler... Bueler??

Don't believe it's possible. I would weight for the Bullydog GT Tuner which typical changes and firms up shift points on autos.

Are you trying to shorten how far the shifter throws or just the shaft itself? Manual short-shifters only shorten how far the actual shifter travels.

If you don't mind an aftermarket shift knob like Momo, you can always just cut down the shifter stalk in-situ with a rotary tool. Aftermarket knobs use set screws and aren't threaded.

When I used to own a Hyundai, guys on the Tiburon forum would shave down their shafts on their shifters. It could, possibly be done. The only thing is that you wouldn't have any threads for your shifter knob.

I have an automatic and was trying to find a new shift knob but the problem was the long shift lever. I emailed Bruce at koolknobs.com (he is the owner) about potential group buy and he was the one that told me about the long shift lever on Tacomas. I unscrewed mine and it was obvious to me if you just place new shifter on existing threads it looks out of scale. Bruce said some cut the shifter length down and then rethread it. Check out his website, he seemed like a great guy and returned and answered email promptly. I gave up on new shifter as I did not want to do needed solution. Curious what shifter you are considering

You can run an 8mm thread die down the existing threads and cut new threads, then chop the shaft to length. The trick is finding a good way to clamp down on the shaft to prevent it from turning, since unlike a manual, the shaft isn't necessarily easy to remove. Do this if you want to use a Toyota shiftknob.

Shortening an auto shifter would be pointless unless the OP is after a custom feel or look with an aftermarket knob . The detent gates on the auto are very short in comparison to the shift stroke of a manual transmission .

Yea, just to shorten the actual shaft, I know it wont change the actual shifting in the gate. I just want it lower profile with a likely just a standard ball knob on it. Thinking the best bet though is simply cut it off and a know whit set screws. Can't run a 8MM tap down it as it has a step up on the shaft its self!

I actually think that would look pretty cool. Reminds me of a luxury car shifter, i feel like those are always short. Good luck sends some pics when it is finished.
