you know, everybody talks about how good resale value is for our tacos. same as harley davidsons. they both seem to never drop in price which for most people think is a good thing if there an owner, but for people like me i look at it differently.
i have a 09 TRD, but lets say i was in the market to buy one. why would i spend $25000-$30000 on a 2010 tacoma with 43xxxmiles on it when i can go out and buy a 2013 tacoma with 0 miles on it. i wouldnt have to worry about someone else beating on the truck. i would be the first and original owner. maybe im just ranting but it seems like buying brand new (if you have the $$$) is the way to go.
anyone else agree or am i completely wrong?

I agree with you completely. I elected to buy a new one for just that reason.

The resale value is so high because there is demand for them. If there was less demand, the value would be lower.

$25,000-$30,000?? Hell, I've got my 2010 Tacoma AC V6 4X4 for sale here in Kansas, and I haven't even had one phone call priced at $23,000 with 46,000 miles!

I agree w/ the guy above, but you are an AC. Some people want pay KBB as I usually pay 1-2k less than KBB pricing. Try and sell yours back to the stealership bshack and see what they offer if its in good condition. My 2010 is valued right at 26-27k. If you have an extra 5-8k more to buy new I would, otherwise you have to wait around to find one available for sell and you probably will still pay 23-25k for a 2010 or newer. Or buy new paying 32k? Just my .02

Kansas was not the ideal state for me to move to. However, when you are offered a job at Garmin, in the Aircraft Certification and Engineering Department, you go!:p
The local Toyota Dealership offered me $20K... No thanks, the truck is in excellent shape, 4 leaf, new tires, and the warranty is good until 2017 or 100,000 miles.

this... but i didnt wanna say it lol.

resale value is great because of the demand. the question could also be asked on why the 1st gens are so expensive why not just go 2nd gen. preference and demand

I used to buy in some states and take them to others where the demand is greater. You can easily make a few thousand per truck...especially the 4 doors with lower than average miles. There are a few 02-03 models I see that have almost 300k asking the same price as ones with 100k. One of the best resell values I can think of.

I just went through the same thing and went with leasing a new one for 3 years then buying it out.

    Which would you choose?

2008 Access cab with 53k miles Sr5 for $20,499- payment of $350 for 72 months

2009 Double cab with 75k miles TRD for $22,999- payment of $392 for 72 months

    Or leasing a brand new

2013 double cab Sr5 long bed for $342 a month for 36 months, then the buyout price is $21,150. Payments will be about the same. So all in all I will be financing it for 9 years instead of 6 but I will start with a brand new truck that I can baby

Doesn't a truck thats 3 years old with way less than 36k (I walk to work) sound like a better deal for the $21,150?

nice looking truck. IMHO its hard to do that for almost 10 years paying for one truck. in my mind if i cant pay it off in 4 or under i dont want it but if you are happy thats all that matters

thats just crazy in any of those.

72 months is just to long for a vehicle payments. Leasing is just bad if you plan on buying it.

I think you have to take a couple things into consideration:

I would not be so concerned with a 2 to 3 year old Tacoma if the price was right, it was only a hwy truck (You can tell if you look underneath) and I could get the options/model and color I wanted.

If there was a good used one that someone had already done some mods the correct way, using good quality parts that we would choose, then why not? The only thing you might have to do, is replace some worn bushings.

A off-roaded truck does not instantly = a beat down truck. One needs to evaluate the truck in question carefully and decide what their definition of "beat down" is.

You also should consider interest rate on a auto loan. I bought my 2004 new because the interest rate was only 1.9% compared to 5.0% over a 60 mo. term. So, it made sense to buy new then.

Yes, I would agree that if I could afford a new Tacoma I probably would get one new.
I am contemplating that decision now, on trading in my 2004 for a new one.
I am having a hard time because I have found a number of 2011, 12, and 13's that are road queens, completely stock, low or average miles, for a decent amount less than new $$$.

I am leaning towards saving up money for the next 2 years for a big down payment and using my trade-in on a used or new. I think it will come down to the interest rate for me. IMHO:)

Using the numbers you posted, it looks like for the three year lease and the $21k+ financed for 72 months at the leases end, you're going to pay ~$42k over the ten years. Hope you enjoy your truck.

When I have to finance I refuse to go longer than 4 years. Paid cash when I bought my Tacoma. Financed $6800 when I got the Tundra. I got $20k for a trade in on my Taco which was a 2009 access cab 4x4 with 50k on the clock. They had it listed for $22,500 and it sold within a week off their lot. Resale value is certainly why I went new back in 2009 since they had 2005's on the lot for well over 20k.

Do the 2nd gens hold their value as well as the 1st gens do? I was just wondering how to compare them as I was curious. I know the 2nd gens have good resale value but is it as good as the 1st gens or slightly worse you think?

Or you can do what I did and finance 24200 pay 380 for a year(72 months) then refinance under a new car loan and lower your payments to 291 (72 months)
