Just bought a silver camper shell w/Yakima rack off CL and thinking about painting it myself black. Any TW members have any experience with the Roll on rustoleum method? There seems to be quite a few people that have done this to there cars with decent success and this video is pretty impressive:

I'm thinking about doing this to my topper and truck as well. Not sure if I could actually get nice results or if it would look like hell.

I used the roller method on a couple of VW Westy tops but they're fiberglass with a slight texture. If I were going to paint something I wanted smooth I'd just buy a Harbor Freight paint gun and use that before I went to all the trouble of trying to use the roller method. I've got an inexpensive paint gun and touch up gun (I can't remember the brand but not HF) and I've painted a VW bus and some other stuff with them and they came out well enough for resale. As always, prep is crucial.

Good to know. I already have the gun and air compressor, just not the learning time. It doesn't need to be perfect, but right now my 1st gen is about 5 different shades of white. Any certain types of paint you'd recommend

If you're going to buy a canopy of a different color match, and not get it painted "correctly", why bother with the expense of an airless spray outfit?
Buy Rattle Cans and spray the dang thing.

If I didn't already have a paint gun that's probably the cheapest and easiest route- there's not a lot of actual painted surface area on a typical shell. Some primer, some Duplicolor color match and a can or two of Spraymax 2K and call it good. You could also use bedliner if you like that look.
