So basically you need to check in at the Discovery Center right?

Not exactly...there's PLENTY of fire roads on the south side of the lake, just further into the woods from the main village.

If you want a detailed map, go to the Ranger station off highway 18 on the north side of the lake, just west of the Discovery Center. They can tell you where all the trail heads are, and which ones are open or closed.

The trail that begins in Fawnskin and heads north is doable with 2WD, and there's plenty of offshoots from there...though, I do like the south side of the lake better as far as scenery goes. More trees, views of the lake, etc.

EDIT: Also, a great place to start is here: http://www.dirtopia.com/wiki/Big_Bear

There are some fun trails in Big Bear. But with the government shut down most trails are closed gue to it being a national forest.
