I go to the dealership even though I'd like to do it myself someday(here and Youtube made it so much easier to learn). I park on the street and it's illegal to do it there. We have a gravel pad and I am not going to go through the hassle of that. I'm still under warranty so it's not a big deal.

    +1

I'll slip a piece of cardboard down so I stay cleaner, given that I'm changing it in the condo parking lot, and not every vehicle in the lot is a Toyota that doesn't leak oil.

My next oil change isn't until of May of next year. I hope that all the snow is gone by then. Having winter 9 months of the year really sucks.

Here's something that will make some of you laugh and cringe.

I did my first oil change on my first car 10 years ago(got what I could from online, not much). It was an 88 Honda Accord. I drained the oil, half of it ended up in the street(under the car with the OEM scissor jack). I didn't have enough milk jugs and rubbermaid containers. I found out it was illegal after my landlord came and told me(I moved from a province that use to have driveways). I didn't even know where the oil filter was. I just refilled it. Since I put too much oil in I was burning so much oil. During a foggy morning I was driving home from work and my co-worker who was behind me couldn't see my car because there was so much blue exhaust. I worked nights so I didn't realize it when I was going to work. I sure noticed it on the way home when the sun came up. I took it to an auto shop not too far from my house and got them to do a full oil change. Everything was back to normal after that. I was always taught to go to the dealership and have them do that. I can't do that anymore. It's sucking money away and I'm not learning anything about my vehicle. It's the information on the net and places like TW that give people the information to learn, try and fix if they screw up. Never going to learn unless you try.

I do. It myself. I'm a diesel tech. So almost everything done to a car is a piece of cake. I used to work at an auto shop during high school and UTI. How you change your.oil is exactly.the.same as how a dealership does it. Except they have a lift lol.

To me it makes more sense to save the money & do it yourself. It's SOOO easy on these trucks, drain it, add new filter, fill it. With the oil filter up top it can't get much easier. I know ppl that have went through the quick change places & got ripped off because of not changing the old filter, so if you do that make sure you check it!!!

For a second I thought to correct you as I have more than one, but you did correct me. Thanks! Never thought about it, but it did look funny when I typed that.
Ok I just wanted to show off cuz I have more than one boat, then I misspelled; knocked me back down.

I don't trust the stealerships' techs so I wouldn't let them touch it unless it is something beyond my ability which requires highly trained mechanic to fix.

I do my own oil changes on all of my vehicles, unless it's below zero out. Then I take it to the local garage and hover while they do it.

Toyota dealership, when/if I sell the prospective buyer will be relieved to see all the maintenance online. When I purchase I like to see that.

New truck so I haven't had to change the oil yet. But, I love how they installed the oil cartridge on this truck with the spill collector around the filter housing. I just sold a Nissan truck. I swear, those bastards hung the oil filter on a string and built the engine around it. That truck was the biggest PITA ever to change the oil. Always had bloody knuckles.

I have to do my oil changes in the dealership since it's under warranty. But once it's over I'm going to do it myself.

Get that in writing and take it to your attorney general.
That is a violation of federal law.
They can not void your warranty just because you did your own maintenance.

Around here all the auto parts stores take them free, I thought it was a California thing, may be county specific. I use all my waste oil as fuel in my diesel but give them the drained filters.

As stated, you really don't. It's a commonly spread lie about warrantee and service.

I think it is a California thing. If a business sells more than a specified amount of oil in a month, it must accept used oil and filters.
I have read snippets here and there, but never the actual code, that they are supposed to PAY you for the used oil if you bring it in a container that you leave behind, such as an oil or antifreeze jug, but I've never seen anything in writing at the stores, and never asked about it. I'm just happy I have a place within walking distance to take my used oil and filters.

Anyone near 91745 is welcome to bring it to my house, I could use the extra fuel!

The damn stealership overfilled my truck during the first "free" oil changes... I kept saying... "the dip stick says there is too much oil".. they say we put in the right amount and don't worry about it...... the third "free" oil change happens and I freak out... It's over-filled again... I say...."drain some out"... they say OK.... Finally it read FULL on the stick..... I've done my own ever since and it always is "on the mark"... So the bastards DID over fill my truck... Can't trust them to set my tire pressure now.....

    They can go to hell...
