I'm about to pull the trigger on one of these. Online reviews are positive, appears to be stout, and stores compactly. Thought I would check with you first genners to see if any of you had firsthand experience, since our trucks are a bit shorter and lighter than many, and offer less counterweight to the load.

I mainly want it for hauling lumber/timber or other materials longer than 8 ft.

Don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. Try it.

I just went out an measure the height from tailgate to top of hitch.

The product is adjustable from 16 to 23 inches above the hitch (receiver tube).

Mine is 12 inches to be even with the bed/gate in down position. That would put the load up in the air 4 inches off the bed. Not sure that I like that. I suppose I could cut down the riser tube 4 inches and drill another hole if necessary...

Putting the load off the bed of the truck would make this rack support the majority of the weight. Not sure what the load rating of this is, but I would assume it wouldn't be much. I do not have experience with this rack, but have hauled my share of materials over the years. If you do purchase, I would make sure the rack is the same height as the truck bed to ensure equal distribution of the weigh. I would think you would be better off buying some sort of rack that would haul stuff above your truck like these...

The above rack is rated at 300 lbs. Depending on what you are hauling it may be sufficient.

There are many options hear. May end up being a little more work to put on and take of the truck, but would hand the loads better.
