I think that with any type of forced induction system, you are going to have to use high-octane fuel. Even at the same MPG, the cost per mile will be higher. Even with premium fuel, though, the fuel cost is a small (but measurable) part of the total operating cost.

I would consider a blower under only one circumstance, which would be regular driving at more than about 4000 feet above sea level. For that, I would want the forced induction. In every other scenario, I would trade for a V6. You will have lower fuel and maintenance costs with the V6 than a blown 2.7.

I attend the university of wyoming and one of the hills on the interstate is killer. I have to drop to third at 4800 rpm just to keep up with the semi trucks. I have the stock gears with a spacer lift running 255 70 16.

That video has pretty much made up my mind. I will start saving. Nice built btw I looked through it when your name was mentioned earlier in this thread.

I have not run into any additional operating costs with the S/C yet, fuel wise I ran premium (non-ethanol preferred but not always an option) prior to the install and found that I got more miles per tank running premium vs regular. The other thing that I have noticed with running lower grade fuel is the fact that emissions systems don't last as long and are very expensive to replace so paying the cost up front in better fuel is worth it to me. I can say this based on the fact that in all our work vehicles we must run the lowest cost=grade fuel available and we have more emissions related issues and time in the shop. This is just my take on it.

Now I will say that there is the cost of the S/C and my mileage has gone down with the S/C but that was the trade-off performance vs economy (which that went out the window as soon as I started modding the truck).

The only additional maintenance cost that I can come up with is changing traction oil once a year for the S/C and upgraded plugs when they do need to be changed (which are what would have been used anyways). The kit is running a mild tune and works well with the motor that has over 100k on it at the time we installed it. This mod isn't for everyone but for what the kit is and the performance it gave the truck it's worth it to me.

my question with all the extra weight you have on it... do you get a pull back feeling when you let loose? Or does it give it the needed power just to get the job done?

Unless you wanted a regular cab(ME) or a cheaper overall price(ME).:p I would have got the V6 if it had been an option.

Easily gives the power to get the job done, you have to think about where the power is on the 2.7 it's mid to high in the revs so down low you won't notice it as much. Friends of mine that know the truck could definitely feel it and describe it as pushing you back against the seat. On the bottom end I have the crawl box and gears but could definitely feel it in situations that rob power like deep set up snow and feeding it the throttle to get up tricky spots on the trail last time we were wheeling.

I have the V6 but know what you mean about the power robbed by additional weight. And you make a valid point about the 2.7L motor making it's power at higher RPM. Us V6 guys try to keep the revs at or just under 2,000 RPM when cruising to get MAYBEE 18mpg.

And to the original Poster: A SC 2.7 will make you the odd man out, but I bet you would love it! Seems you have a truck you like and just want to make it better. This idea is the root of all mods, and trust me, it can suck up all the money you let it! Please post some HP and Torque numbers fot the blown 2.7

My 2.7 felt like my buddies 3.4 that I was driving when I purchased my Tacoma. Here is a Dyno from Gadget (link to original post http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/un...supercharger-05-4-bangers-16.html#post3297350 ) you will want to read the parameters that the runs were done under but as you can see the numbers are close to the 4.0 but mine feels more along the lines of the 3.4 but way punchier IMO.

I've wheeled 4 times since the install and done some higher speed stuff as well. Seems like the boost really comes on at 2k or above which usually in low I'm around 2-2.5k so the boost is there but not in a uncontrollable or explosive sense it very manageable and makes the truck even more fun to drive off road. I'm trying to get a video that a friend shot of some snow covered rock ledges that I climbed in low but boosted to get over the top ledge. I think it shows what its like off road and surprised me as it was the first time I really tapped into it.

One final question. Are you still running the stock clutch or did you get a better aftermarket one?I assume you did since the torque is greater but not quite sure .I have to get a new clutch within the year so I might as well get a good one while I am at it.

Still on the original clutch @ 116k no plans on replacing it yet.

Thanks for the info. I think the previous owner of my truck was a lil rough on mine because it slips a little bit and I haven't even rolled 100k yet.
