In my mind the 2 are far from equal.

The Toyota is a reliable, versatile, well-built, quality piece of machinery that will sustain it's resale value. The Jeep however is cheaply built and has a resale value to match. There's a reason that Toyota is #1 in the world right now.

I had an 86 4Runner that I bought with 243,XXX miles on it. When I sold it 2 years later it had 330,XXX miles on it. All I did to it (maintenance wise) was replace the alternator.

I'm honestly astounded that the big 3 continue to sell cars, but hey, I guess ignorance is bliss.

I owned a 2010 Grand Cherokee and it was ok at best. Electrical bugs everywhere and the lack of quality and attention to detail bothered me. The Tacoma is not the most fancy or with the best finishes, but the quality and soundness are there. Moreover, I always had this nagging worry in my head that something bad was about to happen in the Jeep, just couldn't trust it. I never have that feeling with my Taco.

I think Jeep was once a tough vehicle, but just like all other domestics, it fell victim to greedy bastards outsourcing parts and cutting corners on manufacturing quality. When you look at a wrangler, and the way it is built, and how CHEAP those processes are to build it, and then you look at the price tag? No Thanks......Before I got my taco, I had lots friends who had both and more mechanical horror stories came from the Jeep owners. I knew people who abused tacoma's horribly and they still ran like champs. Plus as others have said, I needed a truck bed to utilize.

Although I can see why the short wheelbase of a wrangler makes a good crawler.

Thought about a wrangler before. My main concern is that EVERYTHING on the truck comes off way too easy ( good in some cases, not in others). Someone could open up your hood from the outside no problem, doors just lift out of the hinges, and the gas cap is fully exposed. I realise that our Tacomas gas cap isn't locked either, but at least theres a damn door for it lol

Oh, plus I trust Toyota reliability way more.

The 14 other Toyota trucks I've owned before my current one had a lot to do with my decision. And Toyota did build a better Jeep. It was called the FJ40 land cruiser. I've had two and they are awesome. Someday I'll build another one.

I own both and I have to admit that my 98 Wrangler TJ is fun during the summer and around town but for room, comfort, hauling, ride quality, and dependability, I choose my '05 Tacoma.
As for dependabilty, I go on this site and most posts are about mods and such but if you go on wranglerforum.com, most TJ posts are issues with death wobble, electrical, starting, HVAC etc.... That pretty much says it all. (although I probably get the same results comparing an '05 Jeep vs. an '05 Tacoma)

My dad has had his 04 Liberty since it was new. It has about 140k and he's never had a problem. That said, it's uncomfortable to drive and the auto transmission has no clue what to do on the highway. It has the 3.7 V6 which has a bad reputation, but it's run great for us.
I also have a 95 Wrangler YJ. Nice for warm weather, but definitely not a daily driver.

My grandpa co-signed a loan for me to buy a 1983 standard cab 4x4 long bed when i was 16, he hated every minute of it as it was Japanese mfg. i beat the living crap out of that truck and other than tires, fuel and oil changes (routine maintenance) i didnt have any problems whatsoever. I jumped it off sand dunes and rolled it in a snowbank, it started in 60 below weather and the only thing anyone could ever say to me about it is "are you gonna fix the rust on the bed?"

After years of chevy, ford, oldsmobile, pontiac, heep, vw, (insert vehicle mfg name here) i had wasted so much time and money i went back to Toyota and although my 2nd gen is not the truck my 1st gen was i will not drive, recommend to drive or purchase another brand! The quality, reliability, and resale have proven to outdo the competition on every level.

I read somewhere jeep started with a good product, whereas toyota just kept getting better while jeep kept getting worse. I think this was in reference to fj40 vs heep, which i plan to own another jf40 some day! And when anyone calls it a jeep u bet your ass i'll correct them!

First post but just got my new tacoma last month. Traded a 2010 wrangler in on it.

The wrangler was fun and they hold resale very well. the rest of jeep line may not but wranglers are in demand these days. If I could afford it I would have kept the jeep in the garage and used it for fun. However that wasnt an option so I bought another tacoma (owned a 2003) for reliability, convenience, and quality.

Im not going to knock the jeep as it is a beast off road and fun with the top and doors off,but Im glad to be driving a tacoma again

There is a time and place for each. Kind of like having more than 1 golf club in your bag, sometimes you want a 2 wood other times you need a wedge. Devildog however, is kind of partial to the Jeep.

The main thing that drew me away from the wrangler was no bed, to much of an industrial vehicle, and when I drove a manual one and did a 1-2 pull it couldn't move out of its own way.

LOL I just traded in my 07 Tacoma for a '14 Grand Cherokee. I've only owned this JGC for a little over 1 month and it's been fantastic.

    It's not apples to apples.

The JGC is more like a car. The Tacoma is a truck. Simple as that. I just prefer a car atmosphere after owning 2 different Tacomas in a row.

This thread made me miss the Heep. Just thought I'd share..
And it also made me remember a time before the Tacoma, where my car didn't go tick, tick, tick, tick, and squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, ahaha.. :D

Just a 3" coil lift from iron rock offroad, stock suspension arms.

My nephew bought a '12 Jeep Wrangler right after I bought my '12 Sport 4X4. Off road stock, the jeep will go further than a Tacoma strickly on size and over hang alone. I had already junked the stock POS Dunlops and had the 275/70 Silent Armors and the stock Jeep would still go more places. Yeah I know, no locker blah blah, his Jeep didn't have any lockers either. I was way impressed with the new plateform with the Pentstar V-6, rode better on road then any Jeep I had ever been in befor. Would I get one...no.

I had a 98 Grand Cherokee Orvis Edition in high school, I loved it at the time. It decided to commit suicide by doing cartwheels through a ditch. I will say though, I walked away without a scratch from a very bad accident and I credit the Jeep for that.

We owned a 99 Grand Cherokee Limited from 01-04. Sold it to my mother-in-law who owned it from 04-11. We maintained and fixed this thing for 10 years!!!

Twelve year old pavement pounder with only 80,000 miles - let's see:

    Throttle Position Sensor (easy fix)
Warped rotors, warped rotors, warped rotors (SHITTY brake wear)
    Leaking radiator
    Leaking roof in the rear
Climate control 'blend doors' failure TWICE
    Heater core leaked
    Evaporator coil cracked
3 out of 4 door locks failed
3 out of 4 window motors failed
    Shocks air-rated
    Rear diff viscus coupling failed

That's only the things I remember.....I know there was more.

Granted - it drove like you were on clouds. Seats were comfy enough to sleep on. It was a tank in the snow. Towed 6500lbs OK (for its size).
I'm soooooooooo frigin glad we offloaded it when we did!!! I pray to God my tacoma isn't like this when it gets this age!!

Wheelbase, turning radius, bed, no need to go on. I've seen a jeep do things a Taco will never do, and vice versa.
