The AIR BAG OFF ON and the AIR BAG light comes on when you turn the key to on.After starting the truck(2011 extended cab 4X4)the OFF ON lights goes out;but the AIR BAG light remains illuminated.I think this is part of a recall that I saw;but the recall says its for years 2005-2009.This recall states that the driver's side air bag might not deploy.I called Toyota customer service(1-800-331-4331)and gave her my VIN # and she said my 2011 truck was not included in that recall. She did suggest that I call my local dealership and talk to them.I called my dealership;but the service dept was not open. Its Fri.,10-25-13 @ 19:10.I'll call Sat. morning sometime after 0800 and ask them.Has anyone else ever had this sort of a problem. At first I was thinking that AIR BAG light staying on might be normal. Now I do not think it normally should stay illuminated.I'll report bk after I talk to my local service dept tomorrow morning.

I called my local dealership and I'll take the truck in on Mon.10-28-13.Truck is still under warranty(14,750 miles,3 years old Aug.2014).I'll show you guys the results later next week.I also filed a complaint with the NHTSA.

On Mon,10-28-13 my Toyota dealership replaced the spiral cable assembly that is connected to the airbag's control module and corrected my dash's airbag warning light. There was no charge because the truck is still under warranty(only 14,800 miles,2 yrs. 2 months old). Now my dash's airbag warning light does not stay on after the usual start-up illumination. I told NHTSA of the fix to my problem by Toyota.

Really? Without even knowing what is wrong you filed a NHTSA complaint? Isn't that a LITTLE premature?

I don't think that its premature.I already know that its probally the "spiral cable assembly connected to the airbag's ctrl module" or possibly the "clockspring." I filed the complaint so other owners of 2011 Tacomas would be aware of this problem. When the air bag light stays on after starting there is a chance that the driver's side air bag won't deploy in event of a accident.

You GUESS it might be that. I've got a truck with the "faulty part" - Still the original OEM sprial cable...No issues. So guessing that you have a problem w/ no proof and making a formal report - that is the definition of premature.

Not to mention - it could be any number of things, but now some guy/gal at NHTSA has to investigate your claim, that you aren't even sure is correct, while plenty of legitimate claims stack up.

not on the 2011 models. Not a good idea anyway to be using a paperclip to do anything on a vehicle.

I had the spiral cable recall done on my 08 and the light only stays illuminated for about the first 3-5sec uppon start up. But it has never stayed illuminated....not even before the recall.

Strange that any manufacturer would suggest just using a paper clip. I have seen so many diagnostic terminals I had to repair because a paper clip was jammed in and spread out the terminals. Would you have a link to the FSM? I'd really like to read what Toyota is suggesting.

I DON'T KNOW HOW TO POST A PDF FROM MY PHONE BUT HERE IS A SCREEN SHOT
    [IMG]
THIS WORKS FOR YAW RATE CALIBRATION AND ABS FUNCTIONS AS WELL
I HAVE DONE THE SRS DIAGNOSTIC'S ON EVERY SENSOR,SQUIB,MODULE, ON MY TRUCK AFTER SANDY TOOK HER UNDER
IT WORKS AND IT WORKS WELL
I HAD A GUY WITH A $$$$$ TESTER AND HE COULD NOT PULL THE CODES...HIS SPECIAL TESTER COULD NOT COMMUNICATE WITH MY MODULE BUT MY JUMPER WIRE "YES I DID NOT USE A PAPERCLIP BUT U CAN"
AND THAT PULLED ALL 5 CODES I WAS THROWING
IF YOU HAVE THE FSM YOU CAN LOOK IT UP UNDER AIR BAG SYSTEMS...."SRS"
    TORRA FSM IS DOWN:mad:

I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS WORKS ON AN 2003 OR AN 2011
BUT IT DID FOR MINE.....I USED THE PDF FROM THE FSM WHICH WAS FOR 05 AND UP
UNSURE IF ANYTHING CHANGED BUT MY TRUCK HAS ALL THE ELECTRONIC CRAPOLA AND IT WAS GREAT......

That answers a lot there. So the FSM does NOT say use a paperclip, it states to use a specific jumper wire. THAT is what I was trying to get at. Using a paperclip can, and usually does end up damaging the terminal. Then when you try to connect up a scan tool or ultra gauge, you get no data, or intermittent data due to a damaged terminal. Not saying it happens every time, but I have seen the damage many, many times.

Calm down man. I was simply checking on information. I get additional info to help others by reading what some people post. I was curious because it sounded like the FSM was saying to actually use an actual paper clip to test. This is always a bad idea, and can damage the terminals. I never recommend people do something that can damage ANYTHING in their vehicle.

BTW, OP, if you are referring to the "AIRBAG ON/OFF" on the center console, what you describe is normal.

AIRBAG ON = Adult sitting in the passenger seat (or object heavy enough to activate the weight sensor)
AIRBAG OFF = Seatbelt fastened, not enough weight to activate the weight sensor.
AIRBAG = Seat is vacant, seatbelt not fastened.

The spiral cable issue is in regard to the airbag graphic icon that appears in the tach display.

THAT light should come on for a few seconds while the truck boots up, then go dark.
With lights, brake, and cruise control off, no icons should be illuminated on the cluster.
