    I just purchased a '12 Tacoma from a buddy

I've yet to really drive it around and have fun with it cause I haven't gotten it insured yet

What's the cheapest possible insurance option for me? I only wanna get liability for it as I'm not gonna be driving it often (and also my state minimum requirements, of course).

Motortrend claims a $1300/year avg insurance rate for the Tacoma

    What should I expect?

Dozens of factors to take into consideration its not even worth discussing unless its with someone local to you. married, homeowner, age, driving history, credit, location...

Lets start off with what state you're in?

Welcome to TW, and congrats on the truck

Insurance is affected more than anything by your driving record and coverage than your vehicle.

On a side note in case anything happens ie theft, uninsured, hit and run would you really only want liability coverage?

I wouldn't buy such a new vehicle without decent coverage as if anything happens your stuck with a pile of metal

2012 with liability is a pretty big risk to take. I'm in PA and I pay $110.00 a month for full coverage and it includes a rent a car on my 2009 double cab sport. My deductible is higher at $500.00 if something happens but that's a small risk I'm willing to take.

I pay 1,100 a year on the truck with statefarm. I dont go cheap when it comes to insurance. Having the right coverage when you need it is key.

It all depends on your location, driving record, age, sometimes credit, and a whole lot of other unknown factors. For instance, for two vehicles (11 taco and 13 rav4) my insurance is a whopping $630 for 6 months (I pay in full and get a $100 discount) through e-surance. However, in CA, e-surance was retarded expensive for me and allstate was cheapest. it was vice versa here in OK.

Basically: Shop around and make a list and go from there. I recommend you get full coverage (required by banks if financing) and don't leave yourself screwed if you total your truck.

I have Geico and I pay $1,730 a year for 04 tacoma and 06 seqioua. It all depends on your coverage, as stated above and your driving record. Just go to All the different insurace sites and get quotes. Ive been with Geico 10yrs nobody will bet their price for me.

Zoot when i was in USAA quoted me at 2200 Glad you got a good rate brother

That's what I've been doing. Cheapest so far appears to be http://www.4autoinsurancequote.com at $86/month. But are they reliable? They seem kind of small time.

Out of the big, reliable companies, http://www.amica.com appears to be the best. $94/month for coverage for me. Not bad....

State Farm also showing up solid quotes, but Amica is still the winner.

If its finaced, you have to have full coverage and a 500 deductable or the loan lender will make you have their insurace and its crazy money.

Some factors that may make you different the the next guys..

    Age
    Sex
    Tickets
    Accidents
    Credit
    Location
    Miles you drive a year
    School grades
Do you have other items insured
    Level over coverage
    Deductible

Is it financed? If so, I'm guessing most finance companies will require full coverage.

So these differences (and more) will make an apples to apples comparison difficult.

Dang alot of you guys pay alot... Yes i have a prerunner but i wouldnt think it would be that much of a difference. I have progressive with Snapshot,(we are saving 30% because of this.. its freaking annoying for the 4 months we had them but worth it..) My 2007 Tacoma full coverage, $500 Deductible and my wifes 96 Civic we pay $898.08 a year (74.84) ... I had to play around with everyone to get it.. I had to switch from 3 different companies before i got a low rate.. I used to pay 189 a month for my insurance

After watching two beloved trucks go to the scrap yard because I couldn't afford to get them repaired after wrecks, I'll never again have liability insurance on anything I care about. Unless you have 10 grand sitting in the bank ready to give to the body shop, any punk with a couple of beers in him can total your truck, all so that you can save a few bucks a month.
