Well that was a lot of Plasti-Dip...

So I got a good deal on a topper yesterday, but unfortunately it wasn't color matched. I don't have the funds to get it painted the right way at the moment, so I figured I'd blow a Sunday and $30 and plasti-dip it black in the meantime. I thought about going white, but it didn't match well at all so I figured I might as well keep up the black/white thing I've got going. Rear bumper and grill have already gotten the same treatment.

I think it came out okay. 3 Coats (3 Cans) of dip and 1 roll of painters tape. The biggest issue was overspray on the paint... little black dots everywhere on my pretty white paint job. About an hour of rubbing and rubbing alcohol and I got it all off. I probably should have just taken the topper off but I didn't have any help today so I figured I'd just take a shortcut.

I'm curious how it will hold up over time. The grill has been nicked up by flying rocks over time, but I would think the topper wouldn't be as abused.

    Thoughts? Emblems are next!

With the way that you did it, it may not last very long. When it comes to PD you're suppose to start off with thin coats and get thicker as you go along. I've done with 6 coats plus on projects and they got nicked, chipped very easily(stock nozzles on cans suck). The little black dots that you're talking about could be because that you're spraying too close to what you're spraying(or liquid under the dip). I would also suggest the next project that you do to do 50/50 rubbing alcohol and water.

$30.00(USD) for 3 Cans of dip is really good. I'd pay just under $65.00(CDN) for those 3 cans.

It looks good none the less.

Yeah, I probably could have done a better job of it - sounds like its easier to peel with more coats as well. Oh well though, it's not going to be permanent.

The little black dots I'm talking about are from over-spray... it was a windy day and since I didn't cover everything, I managed to get a good bit on my truck's paint, which was then a pain to get off. The actual plasti-dip came out fairly smooth - it seems it does a good job of leveling itself out.

You could have used goo gone or probably clayed your truck to get it off

The more layers that you do the easier it is to get off. If you do have overspray on to your paint you can use Goo Gone to get rid of it. The thinner the layer, the bigger pain in the ass it is.

    Live and learn I guess.

I was also thinking about doing the fender flares.. has anyone seen that done? It might be too much for me, though I do kinda like the look on the base Tacomas...

Or can you buy them for a reasonable price?

I haven't seen anyone use PD for fender flares. Maybe someone else can chime in about that here who has done it, or know someone who has done it. You could always try a side of them and see what it looks like before you do all of them.

    Looks good.

You should've masked off much more area before you sprayed... that wasn't nearly enough protection for a spray job, especially for being outside.

Is this enough protection before dip?

Well, I see it's not your first time behind a spray can/gun. :D

Yeah, I went for the quick and dirty method. In the end it all worked out, though it probably ended up being less quick... I knew better, I just didn't want to do it!

Haha! That's funny that you say that. That was the biggest project I've done with PD compared to doing my grill and my lower valance. I like things to be perfect. I take a lot of pride when I do something, I'm a little anal retentive. I have no experience what's so ever about prepping a vehicle. I love working on vehicles.

I did my flares on my 08 white Taco when I put my white FJ rims on to break up the white. Ive done rims, and bike trays with plasti Dip.All I did was wash truck, I didn't even really get the road grime from bottoms, just taped around flares (the tape line when removing tape is a pain) and started thin layers then went super think. It came out great, I did about 5 months ago, and it never had any issues. I peeled this weekend, actully my 8 year old daughter did it and loved it. She was able to pull a hole rear flare off in one peice (except inside above tire)

I actually really like the dip on the topper! Mixed feelings about it on the fender flares though...I've been considering doing it on my own truck but I'm not totally sold on it.
