Well if he just wants cheap, I've got two CB750s sitting in my storage unit that he can have dirt cheap, along with all of the parts I bought to rebuild/mod them.

Going to need a 2-bike trailer and a pickup for the parts, but they're both on non-op so clear with the DMV. Both 1981, CB750K and CB750F.
The K runs pretty well but the carbs need to be rebuilt (leak fuel until the o-rings swell up). The tank has been coated with POR15. I was in the middle of retrofitting the forks with parts from a GL to get dual disc up front when my wife gave up on MSF and the projects got scrapped.
The 750F is in pieces. PO said it ran, but not well, last time he rode it. The K was a commuter bike for a couple of years.
I spent probably 2 years collecting parts on ebay and Vintage Honda.
The K has new airbox and carb boots. I think I bought a set for the F.

Rich, that 750K sounds mighty tempting haha. I'm just worried it might be too big for a first bike. I'm not looking for anything crazy powerful. (granted, the CB750 is a 30-some-odd year old bike, so it's no crotch rocket, but still, that's alot of bike)
I looked at the Suzuki's and V-stars and they just seemed too choppery to me, if that makes any sense. It looks to me like the forks have too much rake to make a traditional street tracker style bike.
I know not everyone's as jazzed about the CX500, but the main things I like about it is the fact that it's only two carbs to deal with instead of 4, like CB's of similar or larger displacement. And I'm still a fan of the drive shaft because I don't plan on regearing it, so I'm not too worried about the ease of that. Plus, it's such a unique and strange bike in Honda's history. I think it'd be pretty neat to own one.

But thanks for all the recommendations guys!

holy crap, how'd I miss this!
Imma look into the VT500. Exactly what I'm looking for.
I love everything about it except the tank, but that's easy to change, no?

These suggestions aren't shaft drive, but are pretty awesome little v-twins.
How bout an Honda hawk 650, or and an Suzuki sv650?

Goddamn, that K is in amazing shape. I'd actually feel bad turning it into a tracker like this
Could you PM me the price you were thinking of for the K?

I know you think you want a Drive shaft because of ease of maintenance. and you are right I guess but you have made other comments about stuff getting caught in chains and what not but I have to say that in my 14 years of Riding I have never ran into an issue where anything got caught in my Chain and honestly it was never anything I ever thought would happen in fact basic riding common since would make it a non issue. Also I found cleaning, Adjusting and maintaining a chain very enjoyable. That being said I currently ride a honda vtx with a drive shaft. It is Virtually maintenance free however removing the rear wheel is an absolute pain in the rear end compared to my ninja. And you will want to be able to remove your wheels to save in the cost of Tire replacement because most motorcycle shops around will charge you an arm and a leg if they have to remove the wheels from the bike in order to replace the tires.

Those are great points. I guess shaft drive isn't essential then. Plus, I'll take any excuse to wrench, so if I need to maintain my chain every now and then, I probably won't complain haha. I'd still prefer a V-twin since it would probably be narrower, but I guess it all depends on what deals i can find on different bikes.

That's a killer frame to start with.

What happened to the truck? This week's rain?

nope, this lady in a sequoia came out of nowhere and somehow ended up facing me in my lane. I think she was doing a multi-point u-turn or something. i tried to swerve but hit her and spun out to the other side of the street. My build page/shrine has the deets.

But yah, I'm stoked about the bike! Sorry, I won't be getting the CB's but I hope they find a great owner :)
