I'm probably the last to know this, but today I discovered that the new 4Runners have a lever operated tranfer case on some models. Maybe there's hope that the next-generation Tacoma will share this feature!

The newer style (2010+) SR5 4x4 models all have the manually-operated transfercase lever, IIRC.

To bad it didn't make it over to the Tacome when the "new style" 2012+ came out...

    :(

Yep, our 2010 SR5 4Runner has the manual lever.

Yup, as I suspected. I'm the last to know! Well, I still have hope. If there's a manual tranny and transfer on the next gen I'll be thrilled.

Auto yields better mpg and that's the direction everyone is going.

If I was interested in gas mileage I wouldn't be driving a truck. I'm willing to sacrifice a couple mpgs for a manual transmission. I'm not knocking autos, manuals are just a strong preference of mine.

Standards give better MPG if the gearing is equal to the auto. I always prefer a standard.

Yes! I'd be much happier with a higher overdrive rather than the close-ratio 6 speeds most vehicles have these days.

Maybe it comes with certain options, or is an option on its own...

It also could be that it's an option, or part of an option group.

But I'm almost certain the 2010-'13 (Canadian) Limited 4Runner only comes in the full-time 4wd configuration (no manual or electric selector).

My Trail has the manual transfer case lever. I believe depending on the option package that is installed on the SR5 will determine if it's a manual transfer case or electronic switch. When we traded the FJ for the 4Runner we test drove a 4Runner SR5 that had a transfer case lever not switch. I believe all the limited have the electronic switch.

I don;t know how it'll transfer over to the Tacoma's as the 4R and FJ share the same variant of the 1GR Dual VVT-i and transmission. I wouldn't expect to see the mode of 4wd selection change on the Tacoma's.

It's my preference as well that's why i bought one in 2009. I traded for a 2011 for auto as I needed a long bed though I did purchase a 2004 in 5 speed.

I've haven't seen a manufacturer gear their auto and manuals the same yet, at least in the newer cars. Unfortunately auto is the direction manufacturers are heading purely for mpgs and Toyota just released their CVT in the new corolla in the US.

We have a 2013 Maxima with a CVT. Yuck. I think my biggest problem with these new tranny's is their not as reliable as the older autos (with actual gears) and cost twice as much to replace.

If you don't like it then why the hell did you buy it????? I refuse to even test drive a vehicle if it has a CVT.

Well that used to be the case now the transmissions are part of the engine management and some now have as many as 8 gears. Think about how you drive a stick, you let off the gas to shift and reapply once the gear change has been made with the auto the throttle remains the same during the shift on and off the gas wastes fuel. Once upon a time automatics were very inefficient and used lot of power to apply the parts inside but not anymore. I drive a 6 spd. And have been driving sticks for 52 years it’s what I’m used to and I like to be in control of the transmission and when it shifts but I have to admit the automatics have come a long way but old habits are hard to break.
