Hey guys- My friend has a 2005 Tacoma 6 Speed 4x4 with 64,000 miles with the clutch recall done at 20k and didnt have any clutch fade or slip before hand. So today we got a good snowfall and the roads were icy.. He was driving in 4WD High (on ice and dry pavement at times) and had to get out of the way of a car sliding through a intersection when his truck hit the rev limiter all of a sudden lost power to the wheels.. 2wd, 4 high, 4 low is all the same, you can put the truck in gear let out on the clutch and nothing happens, just makes a slight "rubbing noise" to put it best. We are hoping that the clutch disc just came apart or a cracked pressure plate and nothing with to do with the transmission or transfer case.. Any feedback or experiences with this..? Thanks for your help!

You should be able to feel or hear something ( even with the clutch disk blown ) when it is in gear and you let the clutch out. No grinding sounds or anything?

I think something is broken in the transmission. Like an Input shaft or gear.

This statement leads me to think there is more to the story than stated.

If he is lucky it will just be a clutch disk or pressure plate.

    I agree, what really happened?

definitely something broke, doubtful it was the clutch all of a sudden, maybe tranny related because he was in 4 wheel drive on DRY and icy conditions as per original postage, the DRY part in 4 wheel drive just may have done in the tranny, especially popping in and out of ice and dry, lots of extra load on drive components....

Transfer case, and or tranny. Sound more like transfer case.

I agree, it sounds like a major shock load occured with the spinning wheels hitting bare pavement, and something broke. If the driveshafts aren't spinning, work your way from the T-case on up the line until you find the broken link.

Sorry for the delayed reply.. I asked him details and he said he was in 4WD High and taking off from a stop sign (still letting out on the clutch) when someone rolled the stop sign and he had to rev the engine (he said about 3k) and let out on the clutch when the truck lost power to the wheels and came to a stop..

We pulled the transmission and clutch this morning and found out that the clutch came apart, the fiber disk separated from the hub and was just spinning.. Ill try to get a picture..

    The better coast
I think Still Will was just talking about those in his build thread recently. My want to give it a look.

He was more talking about being supercharged+more power mods and a needing a new one, but it couldn't hurt to read it.

Took the face off the clutch. The 4WD in the Taco is about 10 times stronger than a lot of people on TW think it is.

Rev it up and dump the clutch. It didn't deface the clutch from the picture. It looks like the center hub broke loose from the disk.

Yep to much traction would be my guess.. blaming the General Grabbers on this one ;) but first time ive really dealt with a clutch hub breaking loose on a unmodified engine/drive set up.. He had the clutch recall done back in 06 when that gave out on him as well

Currently the truck is driving well with no issues to report.. thanks for the replies!

We knocked it out.. Really easy to do, just a damn big transmission for the size of the truck haha..

Main thing is when you install the pressure plate to tighten the bolts down (a little turn at a time) evenly in a criss-cross pattern, install all new bearings, use a centering tool to center up the clutch plate with the pressure plate, use a dry graphite lube on any splines to ease installation, and use a jack to support the transmission after you remove the mounts and take your time!

Its really simple to do and took us about 4-5 hours total time to complete (not including the time it took to find someone to resurface the flywheel)
