I'm looking at a one owner 2003 Tacoma Limited with 206K miles. It has leather seats and a v8. What I can't figure out is the actual style of the truck. It's not a double can nor is it an extra cab. If this were a GM truck, I'd call it an extended cab. The doors behind the main cab open from the front part of the door. The handles are vertical and are shaped like the release latch on the tail gate. I've searched Edmunds and Toyota web sites trying to find a pic but no success.

I did drive the truck and its smooth ride impressed me. For 206k miles the front seat is in really great shape and comfortable. The power lumbar even works. I'm not thrilled about the lack of heated seats or front seat leg room, though.

If anyone can ID this style, I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks Much

    Ken

Taking a picture of it would help immensely. The Tacoma was never offered in a V8, they started that with the Tundras. The 1st gen Tundras weren't that much bigger than the current gen of Tacoma. The only snag would be the location of the rear door handle. The suicide doors on the Tundra had a horizontal mounted handle at the time. The T100 was replaced by the Tundra in the late 90's (1998 or 1999) and I'm pretty sure it was only offered in the V6 (they used the 5vzfe).

First month of ownership... This month I'm removing front air dam, and also Rhino lining the bed.
This makes no sense. It can't be true. This whimsical "mystery" truck is an impossibility.

    1. Can not be a Tacoma. As already stated the Tacoma only came in I4 and V6 engines.

    2. The vertical door handles came only on the 2nd gen Tundra which was made from 2007 - 2014. That doesn't fit with the year the OP provided (2003).

By 2003 the T100 was not being made at all, and it was the 1st gen of the Tundra.

Why don't you copy down the V.I.N. and take it to the dealership, they'll tell you what it is.

Thanks for all the comments. The truck is at a local car lot. It looks more like the pic in Taco95's except the rear door handle is vertical and is located at the edge of the door. The dealer said it was a Taco and I was in a hurry. The remote lock didn't work cuz the battery was dead so I just unlocked the door with the key and jumped in.

I will get down there today and take a closer look and a couple of pics. Yesterday, when I drove it, it was cold, (9) and my grandson and I made a quick stop and drove it a few miles. I did not give it a thorough lookover. So, stay tuned, as the pics will come later today.

Thanks again for the comments. LOL What a hoot this is.

I went to car lot this afternoon and took a few pics. The truck is a .....Drum roll please......TUNDRA. V8 is on the grill and Trunda on the side with Limited under the rear window and TRD Off Road on the rear side corners of the box. Now for the door handle on the rear doors. It's NOT the way I described which tells me I don't always see what I saw. That gave me a thought. Many people have gone to prison on the testimony of one eyewitness who emphatically identified the suspect. I suppose, some were right and some were wrong but how does one know?

Anyhow, back to the Tundra. As far as a truck goes for my needs, it would serve me well despite the 206k miles. The only thing I don't like is the 16 MPG on the highway. When the time comes to send it down the road, it'll bring a better return than the 04 Odyssey I purchased from the same dealer a few months ago with 189k. If it hadn't been so well cared for and was in such great shape, I would not consider a trade but this one is verrrry tempting.

Since it is a 2003 Tundra - are you aware that there is a rust perforation issue with the Tundra frames similar to the 1st gen Tacoma (2001-2004)?

Toyota does replace frames on them if they come under certain criteria. I don't know the specific details. Better have the VIN checked at a Toyota dealer before buying since you are in a cold weather state.

3 months ago my friend of mine just had his frame replaced for free, brake lines too. His is a 2003 Tundra. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I'm not worrying about it, cuz I'm not the one buying the truck.

Just letting the OP know the problem exists. If Toyota is using the same criteria as the Tacoma, i.e. - getting it inspected prior to 12/31/11 or you're up the creek - then he should check it out before buying.

Side note - 04+ Tundras have a 5 speed auto (vs 4 speed) and about 40 more ponies.

Thanks for the tip about the frame. That is very valuable advice. I will definitely check into that and let you know what I find out.

Downright ugly cold here tonight. -22 and only 7:30.

Here's what I found out so far:

TOYOTA IS RECALLING MODEL YEAR 2000-2003 TUNDRA VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE FOLLOWING STATES: Minnesota is one of 20 states plus DC. The initial inspections began 12/09 through early spring 2010. I suspect since it is an official recall, they will still inspect for damage and repair/Replace/Prevent as necessary. However I'll call a yota dealer and find out for sure. Thanks again.

Walk away..... They clearly have no clue wtf they are doing.

Same kinda dealerships advertise 2nd gen Tacoma's with rear defrosters, bedliners, and sometimes super rare trd offroad sport models.... Yes, not 1 or the other but both.

    Possibly even 4x4 prerunners.

Or maybe u just happend to get the sales guy who they just recently hired from Honda or something.
