hated that freaking speedometer location on the yards...was annoying being in the center of the dash.

    Disagree.

I had a Yaris on lease for three years, as a stop-gap vehicle between the time my GMC Safari terminally shit the bed for the last time (want to talk about a vehicle that is expensively shit-tastic? I actually had two of 'em.. the original i bought, and the one i got rid of - i basically ended up replacing the whole van, one part a time over 10 years .. ) and the finances weren't great to afford anything else at that moment of time.

Absolutely no complaint about that 2 door hatchback Yaris, in 75k km's. It came with the TRD 16" alloys, gas mileage was fantastic with it's 5 speed standard, even flogging it mercilessly. Yes, it is and was a basic no-frills econo-box at it's core.. but it took a licking and kept on ticking. I called it my "Mario-cart"..

My sister had a 2001 Echo .. someone else commented that it rates as a crappy Toyota in their opinion. She put 400+K on that thing, minimal maintenance, it suffered 2x 30 km/h rear-enders that punted her into deep ditches both times, had it rebuilt both times.. and it was still taking a licking and kept on ticking when she traded it for a PT Cruiser. She should have kept the Echo, given her experience with that PT POS replacement..

There is a big difference between crappy, and basic entry level... Toyota has made very few crap cars, if any, in my memory going back to the late '70s.. anything that could remotely be called crappy, was generally a joint-venture with GM..

To me, the current scion iQ seems like a misstep for toyota. Not necessarily a badly engineered car, but one that's not right/needed/desired by the market.

The joint ventures with GM still improved upon GM's "quality", although in fairness that is a step down for Toyota for sure..

Kept them off for a while, but I moved out of the shop and into engineering a little over a year ago and put about 20 of them back on.
