I have a 2007 Taco, 128k miles, TRD offroad, 4x4. Over the past 6 months I've started hearing a "knocking" sound after cranking from a cold start. The sound goes away after about 15 minutes. It doesn't happen every time I start up. It also has happened in weather from 28 degress to 55 degrees.

I'm using 5W-30 and oil has been changed in the past 2000 miles.

I've tried posting a link to a video clip with that shows the sound. Any suggestions?

I would try using the Toyota oem oil filter if you are not, some filters drain back most of the oil for a noisier startup but should smooth out in a few seconds. I'm not sure what would be making a noise that long, I had one guy tell me on my older Land cruiser that the noise came from carbon build up on the valves any it would knock for about 15-20 seconds at start up.
I just listened to the vid and could not tell where it came from, are you sure it's coming from the engine?

I'm not 100% sure it's the engine but it does increase and decrease with the throttle. When I'm sitting and idling (low RPMs) it sounds more like a knock than a rattle.

I think you should have it checked out at good shop that has worked on Toyotas just to make sure it's nothing major, hope you find out problem.

It's a mysterious noise. I actually haven't heard it for a few months. Sorry but I don't have any suggestions. It definitely seems to occur more when temps are 60 and below.

An old, worn out engine will very often knock on cold start ups just very briefly until the oil gets around the engine. It COULD do that for years. One that knocks for fifteen minutes will have chucked a connecting rod shortly after...If it really was an engine knock caused by a connecting rod. If it is a connecting rod, changing oil or gas isn't going to help you. Trade it in or prepare for a new engine. Good luck.

I duuno, why are you using 5w30? Is that what they say to use with that many miles on it?
Sounds thin to me. Maybe that's why noise goes away once the oil thickens up.
