I Would not advise you to change/fill your trans fluid, If you pulled the Trans plug and didn't realize that it was trans fluid coming out instead of changing your oil.

I haven't looked into the numbers on this truck... Anyone know what the total trans capacity vs how much is in the pan? I know on my old lexus ls 400 draining the pan would only get about 2 quarts of the 8 or 10 (can't remember) that were in there... Maybe he didn't hurt it too bad and it just went into limp mode? Still you'd think it would throw a code of some kind...

Total is something like 11.5, Pan is 3. If he drained the pan then the pump is dry, possibly overheated, not lubricated. The pump only pumps the fluid into the trans, if there is no more fluid in the pan then the pump isn't pushing the fluid and the remaining is not circulating. This would likely overheat the fluid that remains in the trans.

For the record. The trans pan on a 2012 is as small as the small oil pan pictured above. Oil pan was tucked under the front axel so I never saw it. It's been 2 years since I've had to do my own service. Mistakes happen. No excuses, I effed up. I'll let you guys know if any damage was done. Thanks so much for the quick help! ....and I expect more "you're a dumbass" comments. I deserve them =D

Just an innocent mistake. At least you caught it before something blew up. Just go from here with experience. Good luck....

What I don't get is how 10 quarts of oil only read a LITTLE high on the dipstick. Unless he was low on oil to begin with. He also described what appears to be dirty oil when he drained it. I'm not disputing that he drained the transmission, but these 2 points seem odd.

OP a $2 paint marker would help you out for future endeavors.

My old trans fluid @120k miles could be mistaken for used oil. Dipstick level is still a puzzle, though our dipsticks suck, might not be able to tell how high it is up the "cable" part.
