So much for using the dash cam as a trail cam. I was able to convert the video to a format I could edit, but the quality is so poor I won't even upload it.

Need to find a new cam.

    Good morning everyone.

    Lights, camera, assorted electronics.

    FIFY

I'm not going to say that it doesn't work, but I am going to say that I did spend $12 on a can.

For the trail or a new dash cam?

I've stayed out of that guy's dash can thread for a reason. Those dash cams he's selling can be purchased for ~$50-$60 bucks, sometimes even less depending on where you look. Daylight video quality is acceptable but the night video quality is terrible. Build quality doesn't look to be the best either.

There are some better dash cams out there, but the vast majority of them come from Asia (Korea, Japan, China) or are repackaged cams with a premium price like the one the guy on TW is selling. Panasonic even has one, but the language is in Japanese/Korean and requires a pretty lengthy and time consuming firmware update that may or may not work to change the language to Engrish.

Garmin is scheduled to release two dash cams sometime this or next quarter. One will have GPS and the other won't, but in typical Garmin fashion, they're going to be stupid expensive starting at ~$250 for the non-GPS unit and more for the GPS unit. However, the attraction is that for the first time there will be a quality dash cam available to the American public from a recognizable name.

no need to spend big bucks on a dash cam. the cameras i use for my trail/spotting cameras are $20 a pop, and i could easily put a recorder inline with them cameras and monitor, for a nother $30-$40.

it's not go-pro quality by any means, but it'd more than sufficient for a dash cam.

Yea, I'm not exactly impressed with the camera. It certainly doesn't record in 720 like it's supposed too. Garmin has released one of their cams, but the price and fixed screen are a no go.

Colin, I'd be interested in what type of recorder/dvr system you're talking about. Which cameras do you use? It would be cool if multiple streams could be recorded at once.

Build and more importantly footage quality however is crucial for a dash camera. You need to have high enough quality video so that license plates and signs are legible and night footage needs to be high-quality so you can see the same. Build quality is also important because the on board memory needs to retain integrity during a period of high stress i.e. impact from a car accident. Since the whole purpose of a dashboard camera is to protect you in cases of accidents and whatnot, quality reigns supreme.

I'd definitely be interested in seeing the video quality of your set up. I've been researching for a long time and haven't found a dash cam that I am willing to spend money on. The Garmins are just way too expensive.

what are you doing sunday? if you can come up with some steel by then, we could start your fender guards.

wasn't sure what kind of use you guys were looking at. i use it purely for spatial awareness, whether it be spotting myself off road, or checking my surroundings while driving on-road. for liability purposes when involved in an accident scenario, i'd go with a slightly higher res camera. the build quality of these cameras is nice, and they have proven to be extremely waterproof, and pretty darn durable. the resolution is all you'd need to bump up for more acurate license plate readings. you should still be able to find a higher resolution vga camera for well under $100 a piece though.
