    Stock for now
And now the Frontier is (likely) going to have a Cummins diesel as well:

"The Frontier Diesel Runner Powered by Cummins, as its being called, has a 2.8-liter, four-cylinder diesel engine producing nearly 200 horsepower and more than 350 pounds-feet of torque. Paired with an eight-speed transmission, it gets 35% better fuel economy than a V-6-powered two-wheel drive 2014 Frontier."

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/driveon/2014/02/06/nissan-diesel-cummins/5249375/

That's 29 mpg and 84 lb-ft more torque than we get.

Toyota can only coast on its reputation for so long before it will actually have to build a competitive engine.

Another way to make up "fake torque" is in the transmission.

    Take Jeep for example

in 2013 They have a 3.6L v6 with 290hp/260trq and the Hemi with 360hp/390 torque.

The V6 had a 5 speed tranny and went 0-60 in: 9.1 seconds
The Hemi had a 6 speed tranny and went 0-60 in: 8.2 seconds

for 2014 both the V6 and the hemi got a 8 speed, but kept the same engines.

    The new V6 0-60 is: 7.7 seoncds
The new hemi 0-60 is: 6.6 seconds

Quite a big jump considering they are using the same engine on an AWD SUV weighing over 5000 pounds.

Imagine a Tacoma @ 4300 pounds (DC Curb weight) with a 8 speed and the same 3.6L 290 HP? It would be realistic to see 6.5-7 second 0-60 times.
The current Tacoma throws down 7.8 second 0-60.

A second faster 0-60 is a damn big deal, especially if it gets 5 more MPG while doing it.

** All quoted 0-60 times taken from Motorweek to keep the claims accurate.

Jeep went to an 8 speed, not 7.

Mazda needs the partnership. Whether they garner enough interest from Toyota or Nissan remains to be seen.

I think the Tacoma would be quicker. I timed my Jeep (5 speed auto, 4 door rubicon, 4.10 gears, and dead nuts 5000# with me in it), at 7.4 seconds 0-60. Used some device that plugged into the OBD port, and smart phone.

Everyone can get varying times 0-60, depending on driver, track, elevation ect.

I tried to use the same source to keep everything as subjective as possible.

Chris, motor week claims a 3.6 wrangler Rubicon pulled a 0-60 at 7.8 seconds, although it is reported by many other magazines to be closer to 7.0-7.2 seconds.

Tacoma seems to be 7.4-7.8 depending on where you read.

Yeah, and the gearing in the Jeep Motor trend used was 3.73, or 3.21......cant remember.

Yeah, my Tacoma went about the same as the Jeep IIRC, it was between 7.1 and 7.5 the times I timed it. The Jeep ran pretty consistent at 7.4, although I did a 6.8 one time. I don't count it, as it may have been a mistake.

What's the mpg on your wrangler? I love then from the outside, but the inside has always left me wanting more, much like the Tacoma's.

4.10's were stock? Great gearing for a little larger tire.

the new Rubicons come with 3.73 with the auto. I had to order the 4.10's. Im getting about the same as my Tacoma as for the milage, 17-18 mpg 70% freeway/30% city & off road. The new interiors are greatly improved over the 2011's.

    lol....

i have said it before and i will say it again.

The "new tacoma" which will now be 2016 or later will at best have the toyota 2GR-FSE ... thats a 3.5L v6 which is very similar to our 1GR... but it is direct injected ... makes 306 hp and about the same tq as we make and pushes the lexus suv's around real good making a solid 4mpg more than our tacos... or more likely the dual vvti 1GR found in the current 4 runner and tundra.

Toyota isnt going to partner with mazda.

Toyota isnt going to do a turbo'd gas motor for production in the USA.... plain and simple just look at their history.

Toyota has been working with everyone lately. Mazda, Subaru, Ford, (yes I know Mazda=Ford)

    Scion FRS= Subaru BRZ

    Mazda/Toyota mid size

    And Ford/Toyota hybrid truck

Rhumors? Maybe, but I have heard from both Toyota and Ford dealers about the hybrid truck, parts sharing is nothing new, every car manufacturer is doing it or have done it or are planning on doing it so why be surprised

Last week I attended my very last 5 states dealer meeting in San Antonio (retiring end of this month). This is GST and at it was a VP out of Calf and the only thing said about the new Tacoma was it would have the 3.5 Direct Injection motor. This being a 2016 due end of 2015. Next talked about the Pro Tacoma/Tundra/4Runner 2015 being in dealers hands Sept of this year.
Oh, nothing said about partnerships ref to motor.
