    I know this would not be practical in the slightest but would it be possible to take the older 2nd gens and mod them to have a the new 2nd gen look?

    The OP asked whether it was possible, not practical. Since it's been done by others, it's obviously possible. Practical? Maybe not, unless your mortgage is paid off and your retirement account fully funded.:)
