Well its been awhile since I’ve been on TW but it’s good to be back (not that I posted much before, mostly just lurked) anyways hoping to change that. I’m at a point to where I can finally start doing some "Big Boy" upgrades.

The first direction I want to go in is a new exhaust system. I’m talking headers to tip and everything in-between. I’ve been doing some research and decided I would like some Doug Thorley long tube headers with a Borla exhaust. The problem I’m running into is I cannot find the long tube headers ANYWHERE. I read in a different forum that if you call Doug Thorley direct that you can request them but when I call the number in the top right of this website: http://www.dougthorleyheaders.com/ it starts a automated message about me winning a cruise...

The Borla exhaust is pretty straight forward and I actually plan to install that myself. The headers though I feel are beyond me at this moment as I am quite occupied with work so i think am going to leave the install to a exhaust and muffler shop.

Now if i understand correctly I will have to pick up a O2 sensor simulator from URD correct?

Any help is muy apreciado (been trying to learn some Spanish)

Also note I have a 1st gen Tacoma

Your getting some terms confused too. There are no long tube headers for 1st gens. The long tube headers are for the 1grfe, the 4.0L. The reason being that there where a set of cats on the headers of the 2nd gen stock exhaust. We don't. A short tube headers keep the upper cats and long tube deletes them.

So in other words. There is only one style for our motors.

Headers just take time. Can be tricky. If ya got a busy you can do it.

You only need the 02 sensor kit from URD if your deleting the cats. I am not sure if the borla exhaust does that as most those bolt n systems are post cat.

I have nothing useful to add to the thread, but when I read the title I thought you couldn't find the headers in the engine.

Haha ... that's what I thought as well; I was just curious what the responses were going to be like.

I ordered my DT headers directly from the DT web site as that was where I found the best price ($615.60) with free shipping. (this was about a month ago) URD was considerably more expensive and the shipping costs just added to the bill.

BJs offroad has the best price. There's a discount code on the main page of the site as well.

Couldn't find anything for a Toyota on their website and doing a search for "Tacoma" and "Toyota" yielded this, "Sorry, no products found matching your request.

What are they offering the DT headers for our vehicles (the 3.4) for ?

    That's definitely best price I've seen !

Wierd that they make it so hard to find on the website. How would you get to the "Special buy parts" section if you didn't have the link?

They must have changed the location of these on their site. They were much easier to find (google found them for me) a few months ago. I used the link from when I purchased them to give to you.

It's been a while since I have messed with headers, back in the day it was difficult to find gaskets or keep them tight enough to keep them from leaking. Have improvements help stop this over the years? :notsure:Just wondering, this might be a mod I may consider in the future.

I would guess that precision manufacturing techniques have made it easier to produce consistent fitment and as far as gaskets go, I'm planning on using a new set of OEM which seem pretty high quality on inspection.

The DT flanges are 3/8" thick so as long as they are flat to start with, they should seal without leaks.

I wonder if a lot of the problems come from difficult installation access. Not a lot of room to work with.

Torquing the flanges evenly is the least of your struggles. Getting them into position is the ultimate pain in the ass.

Went ahead and picked up the DT headers for BJs. Definitely the best price I've seen, plus that free shipping. Now just need them to get here. Waiting is always the hardest part. Get to install my snorkel tomorow though.

Are all the tubes equal length for the DT. I know that the DT headers for the 3rz actually decrease the performance. Equal tube length header will give more torque and lower the rpm for the torque max output.

Look at Tooter's post. He has know a lot about headers. He has the 2.7 though.

I don't have a set in my hands but I would say by looking at the picture that the tubes are not equal length.

I have trouble imagining that DT would be putting out a set of headers this long that were known to reduce performance though ....

Well what I took it as for the 2.7 the header made you gain torque but moved the torque peak output up another 100 rpm or so while the LCE header gave u more torque and decrease the max torque output. from 4000rpm to something like 3200rpm. This is supposedly due to the fact the LCE header have equal length pipes.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

I am going to install these to go along with a supercharger.

I tend to baby my truck; I stay in the 2000 ~ 2500 RPM range whenever possible; I'm looking to gain some torque in the 2000 ~ 3000 RPM range for towing a trailer with work/camping gear. No interest in going fast (or quick).

Plan to use the stock cats and exhaust as I'm not into making noise either.

I should try to dyno the truck as it is now (totally stock) and then after mods.
