My 2000 Taco 3.4 has been running conventional oil for 185,000 miles now.
Is it okay to switch over to Mobil1 synthetic oil now?

Thanks

Why switch now?
Switching now could lead to oil consumption because synthetic oil is thinner then conventional and can cause some seals and gaskets to seep a little. But if you are doing a rebuild it would be a good time to start after the break in period

Thanks for the quick response. I've been using Valvoline 5W 30 since she was new and have had zero problems. I guess if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I agree with if it isn't broke don't fix it..however the real truth is,, all magor oil is good. and all will work for normal operation, even the weekend warrior.. but I haul an ass load of oil.. ive seen more oil then I ever want to.. (work) however there is no diff between the thickness of conv and synth...the viscosity is just that .. 5w30 is 5w30..full syn is 100%perfect molecules of oil,,,where as conv is not.. u can switch back and fourth every oil change if u want.. u can even spend money like goofy city people do on the 50/50 blend lol.... however I will say this...I once stood at a refinery where they tore down 6 race motors at over 500-800hp.. the inside of the full synt mobil one engines looked pristine compared to others... just my 2 cents...

I have a story to confirm what coronacross says.

I used to have a Nissan truck and I called the Nissan Competition Department once. I asked them for some suggestions that would prolong the life of my truck motor.

They offered several suggestions but their first suggestion was to use Mobil 1 oil. They told me it's what they use in their race cars and trucks.

The guy I spoke to told me he personally had seen their race motors torn down that had run Mobil 1 oil and they were all pleasantly surprised at just how clean they were internally and how nice the parts looks.

No harm at all, i did it at 165,000. But if you do switch do short intervals at first. Like say 2500 miles, then 3000, and so on. There are detergents in it that will clean all the varnish and sludge in your engine and it will turn dark. I just checked mine often and when it started getting dark i changed it. Now i do 3500 mile intervals. For 25$ at walmart for 5 quarts i see no reason not too.

Here is a pic of all original parts. Still going as strong as day one.[IMG][/IMG]that is277,000 miles on mobil one syn. Best thing I ever did for my truck. Not one issue! Just think how good engine must look. Also, oil changes at 7500 intervals. Oil looks new when you change it.

I have been building servicing and repairing diesel engines for 20 plus year. We do anywhere from 30-50 oil samples a month. Some synthetic some conventional. I have seen no benefit to synthetic. If an engine comes with synthetic from the factory by all means run synthetic. 1st gen's came with conventional oil. Your engine will last just as long with conventional oil. Its more about regular oil changes and change intervals then the type of oil you use.

Ive had two vehicles that were high mileage when i bought them and switched to synthetic. 250,000km or more. Both of them developed oil leaks shortly after. I use syn on my truck but it had 100,000km when i bought it. Just my 2 cents on the subject.

Don't know about syn. Oil that far into engine life. I was taking a leap in 95 when I bought truck new. 500 mile oil change to mobil 1 syn. Saw infomercial on tv. Worked for me.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Is it okay to run 5w20 synthetic in my 3.4? I used a leftover jug of it I had for my old 2.7 Taco in my 3.4 the last time I changed it. Has about 3,000 miles on it now and seems to be okay, but it calls for 5w30 so I am wondering if it's hurting anything to run 5w20 in it.

x100 similar situation with small fleet of gas powered delivery trucks. years of testing and keeping records of maintenance, down time and fuel cost the savings from synthetic oil in the engines did not approach the added cost of the oil.
Note synthetic oil's in the gear box and diffs was cost effective

^^^ What he said. I switched over to Mobil 1 High Mileage several years ago and have not experienced any problems or leaks whatsoever. I'm now at 185,000K and not using a drop.

I am sure there are. But I don't get my info from some Web site. I get my info from years of experience from testing oil in my customers engines. Use what oil you want I don't care. I was giving the OP my opinion from years of experience on the subject. Not just some info I found online. .

If you are referring to me I was not slamming anyone. I was just giving my personal experience with engine oil so the OP could make an educated ddecision with his truck. Like I have stated in the past. I get my info from years of personal experience not just some things I read online. .. I own an operate a business that services and rebuilds diesel engines. So I am speaking from experience. ..
