C channel front bumper

would this work or has anyone done it? I no alot of jeep bumpers are channel but i was wonderin if anyone had thought about this or done it. Sorry if the drawings are hard to follow. 6' or 4"x1.5"x3/16" weighs about 32lbs and would be more than enough for what i have drawn (i am far away from my truck and cant measure right now). I would do the support/mounts out of 1x1 1/4" angle and proly work a mount for skid plate on the angle. I figure the whole thing will weigh less than 75lbs. Anyway, input or experience is appreciated.

 

It has been brought to my attention that the center pics 45° are actually 135°. DARN U METRIC SYSTEM.

 

Subd. Got my attention. I've been looking forward to fabricating a rear plate bumper, as soon as time permits, but I am also interested in new designs for fronts as well. I think using c channel is a viable option. Making the tie-ins to the skid and making it "clean" looking should be interesting.

 

The same design should be usable for the rear but u would want more than a 1.5" leg for a foot hold on a rear bumper i would think. I tried to draw out the tie ins but i cant express it correctly in 2D, i need to have it in front of me.

 

Should this be posted in the welding thread? This is specifically for my 2nd gen but not necessarily only for 2nd gens. I just figured by now someone would have said "thats the dumest thing ive ever seen" by now.

 

Changed to a 120° interior and 150° outer angle insted of 2 135° angles. Just made sense.

Does it work for you? That's all that matters. I made one out of 4x2 square tubing once. You could do something similar with channel in the rear. If you plan on using it to push down trees or actually use it offroad gusset the frame rails too. The frame has dimples in it for crumple zones in the front.

my rear bumper is made out of 6" x 6" tube. very simple design for a weekend warrior with a few skills to build



notch the middle, notch the sides, make some filler plates and mounting brackets and done

it does drag on everything though due to it's depth. Good thing is I can back into anything without worry

 

Thats a nice collection of rattle cans there too.
