About a year and a half ago I was hit at a red light...guy turned into my lane from his (making a right turn from the left lane). Subrogation felt I was 30% at fault. Insurance is such a racket...

Ah. I think that is pretty standard for insurance. I did not read the whole thread, so others may say differently, and it's not law on TX that they have to be OEM. It really all depends on your insurance. My insurance USAA usps parts based on the age of your vehicle, less than 2 yrs they'll cover new party's from factor, post than that they can use other parts, but they do guarantee them for life.

Here in Manitoba we have no choice for vehicle insurance, it's only offered by one corporation owned by the province. Once a vehicle has 20,000 km, they reserve the right to specify "high quality replacement parts" (jobber/knock off/non-OEM). I just got my truck repaired from being rear ended, and fortunately the "high quality replacement" step pad wouldn't snap in to the bumper, so I got OEM. I think the jobber stuff is generally cheap junk.

I spend few extra bucks a month and have an OEM only parts clause on my policy. About a year ago I had to put a new windshield in my wife's Camry because it failed inspection. The glass shop didn't have a Toyota windshield so I had them use what they had. A few weeks later I got a letter from my insurance asking me to sign and confirm a non OEM window was used at my direction. So I know my insurance double checks what parts are used.

Definitely worth the few extra bucks for the piece of mind!

That's not true in Texas. You as a consumer have a law-protected right to request OEM parts be used and the insurers cannot deny the use of OEM parts. If you ask, they have to replace the parts using OEM equipment. In my experience, insurance companies will either outright use OEM parts or will have a very small premium on the policy for using OEM parts.

When someone rear ended me, the adjuster pulled up the toyota oem parts diagram for the rear bumper assembly and quoted that price exactly. Hitch and all. Then I pocketed the cash.
