Last night on the highway, I hit a sizable chunk of 4x4 lumber at 70mph. It hit the passenger front wheel square on, caused the truck to jump and scared the hell out of my kids. Being that it was dark out, I didn't stop on the highway to check for damage but the rest of the way home, there were zero driveline vibrations, no idiot lights and the steering tracked straight.

Today, I crawled under there and checked everything out. There is no apparent damage throughout the vehicle. No dents, dings, broken welds, ect. However, the from passenger lower control arm bump stop embossed the lower crossmember so it was a substantial impact. The hit was so hard you can read all of the lettering on the lower crossmember that was raised on the bump stop.

Since I'm not seeing any damage, should I still take it into the shop and have them do a once over? I'd have to make an insurance claim but I'd rather do that than have a hidden crack on the lower control arm waiting to let go.

Here's a pic of the lower control arm bump stop and crossmember. You can clearly read the lettering from the bump stop on the crossmember. The pic is upside down but you can still see what I'm talking about.

I would have the undercarriage inspected at a shop on a alignment rack to see the alignment specs. I'm sure it knocked the alignment out.

    The better coast
Hitting the wood fixed your drive line problems....?

I would get it checked just in case as well.

The bump stop did the job it was designed for. If your truck drives like it did before, with no new noises or wobbles, I wouldn't worry about it.

Get the alignment checked and have them inspect the undercarriage for damage while they're in there.

I plowed into a good sized rock after spinning a 180 on a dirt road, attempting to avoid an oncoming Jeep. Popped the bead of the tire and the steering wheel was off by 45 degrees. Had the dealership check it. Everything was fine, even the alignment. I love 'Yotas.

The steering wheel was off by 45 degrees and the alignment was ok?

Not sure of the exact wording they told me, was roughly 8 years ago. I recall they didn't charge me for the alignment and said they just adjusted the steering wheel. They did ask "what the hell did you do?" and after I told them, they were quite impressed with how the truck handled it.

Sounds good. I'll get an alignment in the next few weeks. In the meantime, crawling under the truck allowed me to grease the driveshafts...and plan for my future build.
