Hey all, my trucks been doing this thing since I got it where it'll kind of jerk after I come to a stop. Tranny shifts smooth and works great but sometimes when I come to a stop the truck kind of jerks or lurches forward after I let the brakes off. A little research tells me it is likely the drive shaft needing to be lubed. So does anyone have a good link to a tutorial for lubing the drive shaft on a first gen? I don't know where or how many zerk fittings there are.

Basicly for every joint, their is a zert fitting. If you just crawl under there you'll see them in the U joints and on the shaft.

Think there is 6?? or so.

Search "Axle wrap". Sounds like your issue.

sorry didn't realize this was 1st gen discussion. disregard.

the drive shaft in my 2010 was doing this and CAN NOT be lubricated. the part you need to grease is the slip yoke portion. on mine at least this portion is covered with a rubber boot and cant be separated to grease properly. Chevrolet had problems with this, however the slip yoke part could be pulled out of the transmission and greased. not on Toyotas.

I had mine replaced from Toyota under the TSB regarding this issue with an "upgraded" driveshaft, but will only be covered under the 50k drivetrain warranty.

Other than that. you need a new drive shaft brotha. Or you can try and cut the accordion rubber boot covering the slip yoke and try and lube it. Or deal with the annoyance as its not hurting anything just annoying to explain to new passengers.

ETA: as far as I know the factory u joints are not serviceable (cant grease them) either.

I've heard of axle wrap but don't know entirely what it is or what causes it. Anyone have a good idea? I know that basically its when the rear axle torques upwards but I don't know why it happens.

So there is one zerk in my DC joint by the carrier bearing on my driveshaft. Instead of pointing down or up, the zerk points inline with the driveshaft. I don't see any possible way to grease this unless I can rotate it where it's pointing at me when laying under the truck.

I tried to turn it with a flathead screwdriver but I was worried about snapping it off. By the looks of it, I don't think it's been lubed much due to the inaccessibility.

Any tips or advice? I can get a pic tonight if that helps.

You should be able to get the gun on it. If it is inline with the shaft it might have been replaced at some point.

It should look like this. Earlier years have it tucked a little further in but still accessible.

That u joint zerk on the far right is the one I'm fighting. If you rotated it up where it's pointing at the top bolt up and to the right of it. Looks as though I can rotate it by loosening it.
