My 2000 Tacoma SR5 ext. cab w/ 2.7L engine is throwing the P0402 code. I took off my EGR valve and cleaned it. What are some other common problems and solutions associated with this code?

P0402 means 'excessive EGR gas flow detected'.

Could mean that the valve is sticking open (not closing as quickly as it should). In which case, cleaning it would help.

Could mean the the EGR system is working fine, and that the detector (EGR temp sensor) is sending an erroneous message to the computer.

Could mean the modulator (controls the vacuum sent to the valve to open/close) needs to be replaced.

There is also a VSV, but not sure what its role is. That is kinda hard to get at (underneath the throttle body in the little 'tunnel' formed by the intake manifold).

Where can I get the filters for the EGR valve?

That part is the MODULATOR. Try cleaning the filter first, if it looks gummed up. You could run without a filter for a bit, to see if makes the CEL go away.

If the code is for excessive flow, I don't think a dirty filter would trip that code.
    You'd get a 401 (like I did) instead.
