4 cylinder double cab review (Prerunner)

What kind of speeds are you doing on the highway and what tire pressure are you running? I just went on a 3 hour trip and barely got 20 mpg. I was doing between 70-80 the whole time. I have been averaging 21 mixed and I try to keep below 2000 rpm. Mine is a '12 too. Even with that gas mileage I love my truck! It's not fast, but it goes enough.

 

They did me on a 5k but it was a tire rotation every 5 and tires and oil every 10k.
I thought the same thing

 

Well I get both every 5k.

 

Check out your Toyota care booklet. 2.7 gets filtr change very 5k and oil, filter every 10k

 

I drive back and forth to work and it's a stae highway so speed is anywhere from 45 to 60 MPH .

 

Yes, I bought a curt receiver hitch and harness from jcwhitney.com for $200 and installed it. Had a friend help me which cost me a box of popsicles. We ended up taking the back bumper off making it easier. It's definitely a 2 person job unless you have 4 hands. I get between 18 and 20 mpg but I live in a small town with a lot of stopping and going. I also don't have many miles on the truck. It'll get better but anythings better that the 14mpg in my F-150.

 

hey i got the same truck 2013 prerunner sr5 metallic grey does anyone know if its prewired for the fog lights

 

Don't believe so. The only ones prewired are the v6's. Why the 4 cyl isn't, especially the sr5, I'll never know.

 

I have a 2012 tacoma 4 cylinder prerunner and I love it. I have driven the access cab 4 cylinder and I think mine is faster

I just bought a 4cyl double cab 2wd auto. I love it. Plenty of power and drives perfect. I know everyone says they are a dog but I gotta say they are wrong. It's plenty of motor for the truck. If I wanted more power or a faster truck I would have bought a ford raptor. But if you are looking at that style you should know what your getting. I love the truck. I'm getting 20mpg in Cleveland ohio that's with winter gas and warm ups. The truck I had before was a 99 ranger with a 3.0. And the Tacoma is as powerful at that with more room a better ride and better styling. Just my .02 though.

 

I have been looking for a Prerunner Double Cab for a while, and finally found one we may pull the trigger on. It is a 2011 DCSB with the 4 cyl. auto. setup. Pretty much a base model, not even an SR-5 but it does have power windows and locks, possibly the conv. package ? It is a Toyota CPO truck,with 29,000 miles on it and they have it listed for 20,500 at the dealer. It has a couple extras with it, tinted windows, hard back bed cover, and was a one owner truck. We are looking at it for a 17 year old, that needs something reliable to get him 15 miles each way to school, and to work. Just curious if this is a decent price ? I think compared to what we have been seeing, it is a really good deal, the truck is clean and well cared for, but wondering how much not being a V6 affects the price. This is about 4-5 thousand less than any of the 6 cylinders I have looked at in similar condition and options. Thanks for the input.

I bought my brand new 2012 Toyota tacoma with SR5 for 23.5k

 

I got the base model value package 4 cyl. Doesnt even have intermittent wipers which i dont understand at all....but it does have the touch screen radio and power windows and cruise...figure that out... anyways I had to wire mine in from scratch with an aftermarket kit. I went from an 06 TRD Dbl cab to my 4 cyl base. Wanted a new truck but couldnt afford the TRD so i opted for a 2013 4 cyl since i travel to ny a few times a year. Gas mileage is about the same as my 06 TRD. No real savings there since its running over 2k RPM on the highway. Does what i need it to and will do some occasional towing but nothing major. I feel like it may struggle a bit towing.

I have a '13 DC prerunner 4 cyl. I love this truck so far. I have had it for a year now, put about 17k miles on it. I have been getting 21 mpg pretty consistently. Worst tank I have had so far was 19.5. Not the most power in a truck but definitely adequate to get the job done. I've pulled my 16' boat, utility trailer, etc and it's handled everything fine. Looking to put a leveling kit or small lift on in the next few months.

 

Ive noticed the wheels/tires are bigger then stock and also the shell on the back. Did that decrease a lot of power from you?

 

Ok I will play. I just sold my '13 Ford F-150, Crew Cab, EcoBoost for my '14, Tacoma, DC, 2.7, PreRunner. Yes, there is a huge difference in power. My EcoBoost was one of the most powerful, and quickest trucks I've ever driven period.

My '14, Tacoma, DC, PR, 2.7 is one of the weakest trucks I've ever driven, and I owned a 116hp 22RE truck back in the day, so I am qualified to know what slow feels like. The main reason I downsized trucks, was mostly due to the horrible mpg's from my '13 Ford, F-150 EcoBoost. I was averaging 11-12 mpg's how I used it daily, and barely pulled off 16-17 on the highway. Loved that truck to pieces, but actually love my '14 PreRunner, 2.7 a lot more, but mostly because I am saving soooooooo much more gas .vs my previous truck.

I own and run a small swimming pool service company, in which my '14, PreRunner always has 400-600 lbs or more in the box at all times. So my experience will be slightly or more different, than someone commuting in their trucks empty. First off, You will really notice when 400 lbs is on the truck. It is pretty slow and sluggish, especially on any incline other than perfectly level highway. There is a section of highway near where I live, where I have to drive at least once a week that is nearly a 4% grade. My 2.7, PR will climb it and hold the speed limit (if I get a run at it) If I fail to get a run at it, as such if a big rig is in the way or slow driver, then I'm screwed .

It may sound like I'm complaining, but I'm actually not and love the truck. At this point in my life I no longer need to be first at a light, or do 90 mph up steep grades. I really appreciate the fuel mileage, over brute power and speed (gas is $4.10) here right now. I've had my '14 for three weeks and gassed up twice since taking delivery. My first tank was 18.4 mpg's hand calc'd. But remember that's loaded every day with weight, a lot of stop and go, short trips and such. My last tank, which involved a day or two of climbing steep grades, with 600-700 lbs in the box was 17.4 mpg's.

Overall I'm very satisfied with my decision to get a 2.7, DC. The salesman (err sales girl) kept saying how she could make me a better deal on a V6, but I told her I specifically want a 2.7 for the mpg's. Everyone I know with a 4.0 says the gas mileage blows, and my theory is that if I'm going to get a V6 1/4 ton truck, that gets V8, 1/2 gas mileage. I might as well be driving a 1/2 ton truck. (Not knocking 4.0's) I'm just trying to save as much fuel as possible these days.

 

Don't quote me on it, but I believe PreRunner's & 4x4's have lower gears than 5-lug trucks. A lower gear ratio will make the truck "feel" quicker than it is off the line.
