I'm taking a trip up to lassen to hike the peak and camp. does anyone know of any campsites that are in the middle of no where? Preferably where nobody is around so we can be loud as hell. also, i'd like to do a little 4x4 boogie on the way to the site. something short for my stock taco.

if you have any pics/vids, please share!

The Hat Creek area is a nice place to camp. A little more rugged than other areas. Most of the park is less accessible from there.

Outside the park is a trail called Peligreen Jeepway (You can find a description of it in the Northern California Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails). It's about a 40 mile loop of mostly easy/moderate trails. Also in the area, High Lakes. This is more difficult but still doable. Many places to camp and you can find a trail description in the same guide (Amazon carries it but there are also some maps on the site I linked to).

Rolling stock, I'd hit Hat Creek or Peligreen. Probably Peligreen since it's off of 36 which it the road into the park.

The peak climb is awesome and the views, outstanding!

Surprising to se you here, OP sent me a pm in regards to this thread, I was no help, I may or may not have told him to send a PM to a certain expert, but I guess it was not needed since you're already here:D

which is closest to the park attractions (subway cave, peak trailhead, bumpass hell trailhead)?

is hat creek like a normal campground (people stacked together, sites 3 feet from each other) or is it more dispersed/primitive?

    http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/lassen/recarea/?recid=11425

    thanks!

Hat Creek is primitive and Subway is nearby. Lassen gets a ton of visitors in the summer. All the campgrounds are jam packed. If you wait until nearly closing time, September (after school starts), hardly anyone goes as it gets cold at night. May/Early June (assuming the snow has melted) would be a good time too.

The nearest campground to the peak/Bumpass is probably Manzanita.
If you want dispersed, hit either of the trails I've listed and camp there. Or dig around on the forest service site and look for others (under camping).

Also, you want to check the NPS website. They've been working on the summit trail (I completely forgot about that). Last time I went, the trail was only open a few weekends starting in June.

edit: And don't forget to check the NPS site for road info-it's closed most of the winter.

    LOL!

There are others who go more often than I do. I do love the park though. I kind of wish it was closer.

Ran into that problem last time I went, but that was almost 3 years ago I think.

Would be nice if it were closer.

Whenever I'm looking for advice on a trip you seem to always be the one to give good advice on attractions, seems like you get around quite a bit:D

You're right, I have been a couple of places. :D

I'm not sure what they're doing to the trail that it's taking so long. It's been a while since I went to the summit but I do remember it being a bit of a slog in a few places. Maybe they're re-routing?

Yeah I'm surprised it's taking them this long, it started after a kid got killed in a rock slide when he went off trail, but that was 5 or so years ago.

Ever been to castle crags? Short hike but it sure is a butt kicker. But great views from the top.

 I've been somewhere you haven't!

It's nowhere near Lassen but is defiantly a great place to visit, I haven't explored much but the falls I linked earlier and there is a nice drive right Next to the park, caste creek road. Is a nice place to stop for the day, or weekend but it's right of the highway.

LOL. The Dunsmuir area is absolutely beautiful. Lake Shasta, Trinity Lake, Lake Siskiyou. Shasta City. There's tons to do there too.

Dunsmuir was the site of a huge train wreck that dumped a shit ton of hazmat into the river and in a fucked up way, it was the best thing to ever have happened to the town once it was cleaned up. Not the sleepy little town it once was.

I would like to spend more time up toward Alturas and see some of the lakes out there.

thank you both for the information. i'll check out hat creek for sure. i don't see a lot of information on peligreen and it's kinda far from sac to start exploring. i'll probably be ready to just set up camp and drink when i get there!

any idea who maintains peligreen? i'd like to look into the rules re permits/dispersed camping.
