This is one of the tightest vehicles I've ever owned, but I've got one rattle- believe it or not, when I go over a decent bump the headrest on the passenger side rattles. Has anyone else had this?

I tried pulling the headrest out and spreading the posts apart then forcing it back into the seat- no luck.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Is it the headrest? I picked up my 2012 on Saturday morning and can't believe that rattle is there.

Mine rattles. I pull it out and leave out when i'm alone. My girlfriend putts it back in when she's in the truck, doesn't rattle when someone is in the seat. Then i pull it out again next time i get in the truck.

Man I thought it was just me. It's ridiculous that this remedy [removal of the headrest until seat is occupied] is the only way to make this rattle stop. The seat and headrest materials are just too light. I dare not take it into the dealer, just for them to tell me they don't have a resolve. Oh well at least the whistle around the windshield is not 'as' loud as it was. For a 2012 Toyota product I'm sorely disappointed. Wish I'd heard this on the test drive or I wouldn't have bought it but of course the salesman was sitting in the passenger seat. :(

I had the rattle in the passenger seat head rest when no one was in the passenger seat and it was driving me crazy. If I took the head rest out, the rattle stopped. After looking very closely at the problem I discovered that problem was the female inserts that the head rest slides into.
I corrected most of the problem by cutting a Home Depot paint stir stick to about 5 1/4 inches and forcing the stick between the two female inserts. You should to this with the head rest installed and raised because it will be more difficult to install after the stick is placed between the two female inserts. This corrected 95% of the rattle for me. I can live with the other 5%. I tested it with the head rest all the way down because I never have anyone in my passenger seat over 5' 6".

I also had a small rattle where between the seat back and seat bottom. I fixed this by putting a folded hand towel between the seat back and bottom.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. My passenger seat's headrest rattles over every single bump I hit, and it is getting worse. Being the mechanical engineer I am I had to get in the back and experiment. I haven't taken the seat apart to see what horrible design is at play, but can reproduce the rattle 100% of the time w/o even driving the vehicle. Totally unacceptable.

Thanks for the possible solution. My 13 does this too.

It's not the headrest, it's the seat belt buckle hitting the side pillar. It will sound like your headrest is rattling.

Mine does this one too, they are two separate rattles.

My passenger side headrest started this crap about two weeks ago...2013 tacoma. I'll take it back to the dealer and let them mess with it. Anyone who is still in warranty should take advantage. I take mine back for anything I don't like. Want it all sorted before I'm out of warranty. My 2007 FJ had a crap ton of rattles that I systematically took back to the dealer until they were all gone. The taco has been back several times as well...and will continue to go back until all the rattles are gone.

Don't like going to the dealer.

The last time I went for one of the "free oil changes", I couldn't move my truck off the lot. Took a day to fix a rear brake they broke while messing with it. Then when I took off my tires to install airbags found out they lied about the work they did.

Fair enough. I've had those kinds of problems (and much worse) at Ford, Dodge, and Jeep dealerships but not at a Toyota dealership...yet.

In my case it is absolutely the headrest. I thought it was the seat belt, as that was the case in two previous vehicles, but have confirmed the source.

Mine will be bak at the dealer in a week or so, I think. I took it in for the headrest rattle and a clunk in the drivers seat. They spent so much time on the drivers seat that they didn't have time to try anything with the headrest. I may be getting a new drivers seat soon. If/when that happens, they'll dive in and try to fix the headrest at the same time. I'll keep this thread updated.

I have the same issue with my '12, took it to Toyota. Seat/headrest rattles like crazy on a slightly rough road and I'm just talking about a road that isn't freshly paved. Took it to the dealer, they duplicated the problem. According to the dealer, Toyota told them to try another truck on the lot and see if it does it. It did. So Toyota said it was "normal." Therefore no fix. They pulled the same thing with my grill surround discoloration.

Called Toyota directly about the grill surround and they don't give a shit.

Going to try a different dealership in town and see what happens.
