So I think I'm going to go with a ultra guage. Any recommendations on the mounting hardware/brackets I should order with it. Without seeing it in person I am unsure as to where I will mount it

I need to correct myself on this, I think.

I assumed I didn't have a tranny temp sensor, since my UG did not list it as an available display item. I just checked my FSM (the electrical diagrams), and it shows that sensor ! Maybe the sensor is sending a signal to the ECM to affect something, but the ECM is not storing it ? Just don't know.

So, still not sure if the Scan Gauge will pick it up or not

Where would the sensor be, if there was one? On the tranny pan? Cooling line?

I would think that a 99 would have a trans temp sensor because I know my 99 4runner had one.

It appears my truck does have a sensor that is sending a temp signal to the ECM. If the scan guage can pull trans temps off some first gens, I'm thinking it will pull mine

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
IIRC, it has something to do with the lock up clutch primarily. To keep the fluid from getting too cold with it engaged too long.

Not located in the pan. Not sure where, but this link def shows it mounted on the outside of the trans:

Worth a try I guess. If it doesnt work, send it back and get the UG.

And to Tan4x4, that pic looks like it's on some sort of line. Maybe the line that sends it to the radiator?

So I still haven't decided what to get. I emailed scanguage and they cannot confirm if it will work or not. They actually don't have a x-guage code for tacoma trans temp before 05, but told me there's codes on forums that work. They just could not confirm if it would work on my 99

Did you ever decide on getting one of these? Im on the fence about getting a scan gauge and trying to see how others like it. Can get it from my local advance auto for $48 off, but im trying to see how others feel about it first.

I haven't yet, I'm still trying to find out if it will read my trans temp cause that is really what I want. I'd really love an ultraguage, but they do not read toyota trans temps. Scanguage does, but nobody can tell me if it will read it older then an 01. How are you getting it at $48 off!? I was gonna order off Amazon so I could send it back no problems if it doesn't work for me

I ended up getting the scangauge, and input the x-code I found on here that worked for a 2002. It's reading something, and according to scanguage that means it's working. It's the one labeled TRA
