This is a different version of the which tire question that I couldn't find. I am looking to shed weight from my wheels but still look cool. Currently I am running Goodyear MT/R at LT285/75R16 (load range E) that weigh in at about 62 lbs a piece. I would like to get a second set of wheels and tires to run on the highway that still fill up the wheel well but have less rolling resistance and weigh less.

I am seeing that the Nitto Terra Grappler in P285/70R17 117S weigh about 46 lbs and are an almost identical size. I'm sure there are plenty of other tires like this that I could find with additional research but I'm lazy and want you guys to do my work for me.

I am not worried about rubbing as I have already solved that problem with my current set. I'm not worried about aggressive looks or off road capability as I currently have that. What I am hoping to hear from TW is which tires people are running and how they perform with regards to road noise and MPG. Throw some ideas out that I may have not considered or just tell me to quit complaining because its a truck.

I've heard the stts are the longest lasting mts because of there harder durocitry but you have a little harder ride. I thought about them

The Cooper STT doesn't come in this size but the Cooper ST does and it is a great aggressive all terrain tire.

How many miles did you put on them? How did they hold up?

MTs are hardly mallcrawling tires. Did you miss the part where I said I was looking for a lighter less aggressive tire?

255/85/16 Bighorns and ST's are lighter, get better mpg's, and fill up the wheel well better than your 285/75/16's.

Checks off just about everything on your list.

20k with not much noticeable wear. My brother owns my old truck and it's still got the nittos. Just rotate them every oil change

Basically, just want to avoid LT E range tires. My plan is the only dirt they see is at the base of a trail before I switch out to the MT/Rs. Pure Mall Crawler status. I don't want an aggressive tread pattern that adds a lot of rolling resistance, right now when I let of the gas my truck quickly sheds speed.

True, but I already have the M/T and it wouldn't make sense to spend money for marginal gains.

If I'm understanding you right you want a highway tire? If so then the ms2 is the only one to consider. If you want an a/t look at toyo open country 2's.

I purchased the cooper AT3s a year ago... Love them so far... Truck doesn't see offroad use besides trailering through the offroad parks. Quiet, and my MPG is still pretty good at 19 hwy sometimes 21 depending on wind direction.

I have the Cooper AT3 275 70 17 and I love them. They are a great tire, rain, standing water, snow, deep snow, dirt, sand dunes and towing a heavy trailer, they do it all good. The goodyears are better snow tires and look more aggressive but have softer side walls.
The Coopers handle good but are a little stiff, have a little road noise and the 32 like I have eat a little more gas.... If you need to tow and need a good AT the Coopers are hard to beat...

I've got 51,000 on my Terra Grapplers and they have held up great. I'll probably get another 10,000 out of them. Work well in the rain and do what I need off road too.

Why do you have load range E MTRs on a tacoma?!?! Thats just too much... My dad has nitto terra grapplers on his cummins though and they're rather quiet and smooth.

Cause that's how 16" MT/Rs are made. Extremely happy with them offroad, made it through and out of places I wouldn't with a lesser tire. And I don't worry about cutting them like some of the other guys I go out with.

Bilstein 5100's set to 1.75. K&N air filter, aux input solder on stock disk changer, westin running boards, and rain guards.
Bridgestone dueler revo at 2. 265/75/16. Costco has em on sale all the time. They work great off-road in the mud and sand. And they are quiet on the highway. I wanted a tire that mph didn't suffer from, looks good, and inexpensive. These are what I found to be all around the best tire.

lol you could always go with the classic mall-crawler... Super Swamper Thornbirds. The worst off-road tire ever with an aggressive cut. TRXUS STS would be my close second for looking aggressive (and being known as generally not being a great offroad tire. I don't know if that's your goal but nothing screams mall crawler like purposely buying a tire that's bad offroad.

I'd also take a look at any of the Mickey Thompson offerings, or Pro Comp.

If you want something less aggressive that doesn't scream just mall crawler you could probably just get a decent A/T. Someone already mentioned it, but Toyo's Open Countries were not bad at all on a truck that I had before.

Hankook RF10s fit the bill, look good, pretty good offroad, good mileage, and great for winter driving.

I just put these hankook dynopro atm's 275/70/17 last month and loving them so far. I went from the kevlar mtr's in 285's and damn. My truck rides like a Cadillac. Not really but it was a huge improvement for on road driving.
