What is the risk associated with wire brushing and painting my Tac frame if Toyota later decides to do a frame recall?

My 06 is in pretty bad shape, no holes but I am able to pull large chunks out of the inside of my C-Channel. I reported this to Toyota NA, but they said there was nothing they were doing for 2006s.

I was planning to follow this procedure:
    http://www.dieselpowermag.com/tech/1008dp_truck_frame_rust_removal_and_prevention/

I have the tools and paint ready, but reading here makes it sound like a recall may be building (but that could just be wishful thinking).

    Thoughts?

I wouldn't hold out hope for the same type of replacement or buyback the 1st gen guys got.

I've been busy with three different wire brushes, scrapers and a vacuum to get the bad stuff. Then tomorrow I'll hit it with Purple Power degreaser and the pressure washer.

Once that's dried, I'm hitting the remainder of rust with Rust Bullet, then a topcoat of Rustoleum Satin black, both brush applied. To finish, it up, I'm going to coat the frame and some spots on the floor pans with Fluid Film before snow flies.

Why wait until there is further trouble?

My only advice for this shitty job is have a good creeper and wear safety goggles, not glasses, to keep rust out of your eyes!

I spent about 7 hours under my recently purchased 05 last Sunday doing the 3 step KB coatings Chassis Saver stuff. Major PITA but the truck is really clean and I plan on keeping it for a while. The key to all the rust remedy stuff is to follow the directions EXACTLY. I've used POR15, Rust encapsulator, Rust Bullet, and now the KB coatings stuff. It all helps a lot but it's not like you'll never touch it again. I plan on doing fluid film in the fall also.

as someone who grew up and lived in CT, my opinion is the place is a dump and you need to leave for a better environment.
You and the truck both win. :)

Update: I went to the dealership, they agreed the rust is excessive and found holes. They took pictures and shared the info with the "Field Technical Specialist". His response: "we have no programs for 06 Tacoma's at this time" My dealership doesn't know what to do next. They had me call the "Customer Experience" line: she repeated several times that there are no programs for 2006 Tacomas (almost robotically). Any advice on where to go next? How did the folks who got a 2006 frame replacement escalate? How do I get in contact with a Factory Representative? Cheers. sa

I have a 2005 that I've power washed and sprayed for the past 3 years calling Toyota with rust complaints, The other day I noticed rust stains around my rear door handle!! Original owner of a well cared for 2005 DBL Cab with 63K miles! Little worried!!

no real news from me, the dealership still won't budge, the Regional Service Rep and Toyota Help line all repeat the "No active Warranties" party line. I haven't figured out where to find the Factory Rep (anyone know who that would be for New England?). I washed and oiled the Taco this weekend. I have to clean the pile of rust flakes off of the driveway still. How should we escalate this issue? sa

You need to make sure you get to talk to the Regional Service Manager (not Rep, Manager). You also need to draft and send a letter to Toyota Corporate about your issue. Not an email, a letter that you will send USPS certified, signature required. You also might want to get a lawyer on board. Oh, and my advice:

Did they say that this will now be a TSB? I feel like I would have heard if this was a national campaign. I have a rust hole on my motor mounts and it worries me.

No idea. I bought it with 145k on it. Didn't think to look way up by the mounts until u joined TW. I had it inspected at a toyota dealership before I bought it though. They have the okay so I would hope I'm covered

Has the "Limited Service Campaign" (E0D) been extended outside of "New England" for anyone yet? I phrase is as such because Toyota informed me the Connecticut is not part of New England. The Frame Inspection/Treatement/Replacement Campaign is supposed to last until May 2016. :sa
