Hi, I'm the proud owner of a 1995 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 V6 3.4L 5VZ-FE (OBD1), I bough it in 1999 it was and it is in Perfect condition... But... a couple of years ago I got my hands on a New TRD Black Supercharger Kit along with original TRD Headders so I went to a Toyota Dealer and have everything installed, it did not work at all so I upgraded the exhaust to a 3 inch pipe with a Flowmaster, also did not work, also add a TRD air filter and nothing, there was no boost only vacuuum and when on acceleration the boost gauge went from -20 to 0. So I purchase a Toyota Yaris and have my pick up stored for some time, recently a couple of months ago a friend of mine told me that he think that the Toyota guys at the dealer where they install the supercharger did something wrong, so he reccomended me another dealer where the Mechanic Supervisor has a newer tacoma supercharged, I left my Tacoma at that dealer and explain the history of my beloved pick up, a week later they did found that there was a vacuum line connected to the gas regulator so the more you throttle the less gas I was getting to the engine, so they connect it correctly and got like 5 psi, I had purchase the URD Small (Red) pulley for the supercharger but only gave me 2 more psi, so on a good day my best boost is at 7psi
NOW The BIG Question... Can I swap my ECU wich is OBD1 for another like 1997 4x4 V6 3.4L 5VZ-FE OBD2 ? Is it plug and play or do I have to reconfigure the whole ECU and if so, how do I get or set up the diagnostic port that goes under the dash, can that be done or do you know someone that has done that ?

You don't want much more boost than 5 or 7 anyway, the engine isn't designed for it. 5PSI boost is a decent amount unless you want to build the engine from the ground up to handle say a 20psi boost.

    This

Also your truck is OBD 2 if it's a 95.5 tacoma (first year was a half year) instead of a 95 pickup.

What date was your truck manufactured? It'll say on the door jamb.
The OBD plug should be under where the E-brake goes into the dash.

I cannot help you with the other part, I forget who has done it before and Can't search right now as I'm supposed to be writing an outline for my final tomorrow.

I've done a mod or two
I have a 95.5 with OBDII under the E-Brake in the normal area, there is a diagnostic port under the hood too though.

My truck was manual everything, maybe why I only have port under hood? Same year as yours. My plain jane 96 reg cab same way.

But Does that makes it OBDII... Hmmmm.... What I don't really understand is why there's a (Gray TRD) Supercharger wich not only fits like "The Black One TRD" it shure does the same thing, but the grey for some misterious reasons makes more boost in those years (before 1995.5) but when I installed the newer it sucks for boost, you don't feel the push, and the advance timing sucks more. Ecause you can hear the engine trying to produce but the ECU does not allow it... And to make things worse this ECU is NOT reflashable nor you can't send it for performance programming. I'm thinking to put some bigger injectors and pray for them to work. I guess I've got the bad year Tacoma but I love so much that damn truck.... Thanks for all the help...!!!!

Ok FINALLY !!! I got my hands on a 1997 Toyota Tacoma ECU (4x4 V6 Manual Transmission) and installed it to my beloved 1995 Tacoma and... wait for it...

OMG...!!! This is another kind of animal, now I know how a supercharged pick up feels, AWESOME !!!
of course now I want the limited slip differential and then some. The only detail is that the check engine light is on because of some gasoline sensor that my pick up does not have but it does not bother me. Every time I floor it, my eyes don't see the check engine anymore. It has to be a psychology effect induced by speed, jejeje.
So thanks to everyone involved in this post, now you know that is real, if you want to Supercharge a 1995 or 1996 tacoma truck you must and will have to install a 1997 ECU with the exact same specs (Manual or Automatic, V6 or 4cyl, 4x4 or not) it is very important. The problem with 1995-96 ECU's is that they do not advance or retard accordingly to the "New" equipment installed. So if it's 1995-96 ECU Swap it with 1997...

    PROBLEM SOLVED !!!!!!!!!!

By the way my 1995 Toyota Tacoma is OBD II the port is hidden on the right side of the steering column.

and did I mention that Superchargers are AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!

Hey jrvarona I know this is an old discussion and you may not answer. My question is what part number is your ecu? I am having a big problem finding one for my 95 tacoma. Ebay is not a very good resource, they only know part numbers and nothing else. They don't even have the part with them..... your help will be very helpful.. Glad you love you supercharger!!! I wanna love one too!!! My truck is a 95 tacoma 4x4 M/T V6 3.4 Xtra Cab
    Thanks!!

Hi there, How's it going? I just have a question if you don't mind. I have a 1996 Tacoma 3.4 5VZ-FE regular cab manual transmission.
I'm currently doing a full top and bottom rebuild on my engine now I'm thinking to put a super charger with that being said
I have to replace my current ECU right?

Yes you need a 1997 ECU that is from a truck like yours. The only difference is the year

Hello Jrvarona, I’ve just installed my supercharger with all that is needed. I works great when rpm is from zero to just around 3000 than the engine starts to hesitate. It’s either not getting enough air or gas and I can’t figure this one out. So in other words it doesn’t pull through out the the RPM’s just as you need the passing power.
Anyone else with this problem? Please help
    Thanks Paane

Update on this issue. I found the problem. The PCU that came with the 7th injector system wasn't picking up the rpm signal. So I needed to disconnect the Black w/yellow stripe wire coming from the PCU that I connect to the IGF black w/yellow stripe going to the ECU. I needed to add a wire from the PCU Black w/yellow striped wire and connect it to the black wire on the igniter harness which is the tachometer wire number 8 pin or slot. It is located on the passengers side inner fender behind the air filter box. So in other words the PCU wasn't doing any fuel adjustments. Or that's what I think. Now I have power through out the rpm range from zero past 3000 and up. I hope this will anyone who has this problem.

What changes have to be made to the 97 ECU when used in a 95 Tacoma?

What repinning on the 97 ECU to work in a 95 tacoma. The ECU is from the same truck except for the year.
    zhovreboff@aol.com

Will a smog check detect a different ECU?
