I know I'll probably get a lot of "there's much better out there" or "stock skids are worthless" but I'm doing a light budget build on my Sport and I do some mild trail riding on the weekends. I went with a friend to a place called Wheeler Pass just outside of Vegas last weekend, in which we were driving his lifted '90 Suburban. He took some pretty good hits on the driveline and rear end which caused a leak but this all got me thinking that I should add some protection under my Taco for even these mild trails. I was mostly thinking about the gas tank skid and the skid that skid that goes under the front diff I believe. Basically the two that are missing on the Sport vs the OR. How much should I pay for them used?

If you plan on offroading why not go with aftermarket skids?

I do light trails, kind of like expedition style. I DD my truck and don't do anything really rough but wouldn't mind the peace of mind of at least having something under there.

If you want protection from anything more than water, go aftermarket. You will regret the OEM skid when it comes time to use it. I'll send pics of mine after work if you want to see what I mean.

3" lift (coilovers in front add a leaf and 1" spacer in rear), 33" grabber at2, powertrax rear locker, lce long headers w/high flow cat. and magnaflow catback, hurst shifter, roll bar... lots of lights
I'm just running factory skids on my 2004 taco. Aftermarket ones are so ridiculously expensive. I've been lucky. The biggest risk is when you go into murky water/thin mud and don't know what's underneath. People tell me about how much I'll regret not having skids but I can't even find any cheaper than my front diff. Anyone know where there are some reasonably priced functional skids for a 1st gen? (I don't mean to hijack.)

I'm in the same boat Hardgour. I would love to go aftermarket but for $50 for the diff and gas tank should I still say no? I already have the trd front that came on the truck when I bought it. I guess I'm asking are these better than nothing?

You can bend the stock ones by hand so they wouldn't do anything if you actually hit anything.

IMHO it's as good as nothing. I got a All Pro skid for about 220 with free shipping and is a heck of alot stronger. If you watch this site you can find mega deals.

This. You'd get the same protection and spend a lot less if you double wrapped aluminum foil around vulnerable points.

Lol, ok I get the point. I will look into other options. Besides, I don't think the gas tank skid would fit on my DC Long bed anyways. I thought they all had the same size tank.

My OEM (Factory) TRD skid plate works just fine for my needs. Now I don't rock crawl or do any severe off-roading. But I do spend a lot of time up in northern Maine on forest/logging roads.....which range from pretty smooth to washed out river beds to goat trails in quality. The regular grading that is performed causes rocks to be torn up and often exposed ....I've hit numerous ones and that skid plate hasn't dented yet. I've hit that skid plate on old rutted & muddy logging roads.....not a dent. I've crossed streams where the bridge was washed out and hit the skid plate on approach...not a dent. Now, like I said, Im taking my time and not doing hardcore rock crawling or severe off-roading, but this one (I just painted black) does all that I need it to do. Just my 2 cents.
