I'll find a replacement but it sure wont be the POS toyota uses now

This will probably be the end result for me as well, if I gotta drill it out so be it, at least its soft

Keep us posted if you take that route. I didn't know the best way to do that, so it hasn't been done yet. This is such a common problem that I am sure many others would find the information useful as well.

Well the drilling part is easy, retrieving the chips out of the diff will be a little harder, there again, at least its soft metal, I may just get it close by drilling but not actually drill all the way thru, get a nice hardened punch & blast thru the last little bit of depth with a good solid smack making a hole big enough for an easy out , that way shouldn't be any drill chips falling into it, & if some do, couldn't be any more than 1 or 2 which will be big enough to get to fairly easy... what a stupid fucked up design this was...

But before I do anything that might introducw shavings in diff , I'll try the freeze method & failing that I'll get my big chisel & cut a big horizontal slot all the way across that POS & tap it out a little at a time till deep enough then a couple good smacks might free it up

What's a good replacement for the fill plug? The center of mine is getting more round each time I take it off.

I'm going with ANY nut that fits the thread that has a simple 4 sided raised surface, kinda like what 99% of the rest of the world uses, anything but this dumbass 'yota app.

Won't be too hard to find (Abbaba bolt here locally or fastenall for nationwide members) Even if I have to make a gasket for it if no sealing ring/washer is available, if yours is about done but still in decent shape you may be able to weld that allen head wrench in place , what I'd do if the material can hang together (stock drain plug) is place the hex wrench in as deep as you can get it (already sounds like sex) & get a good weld around it if possible leaving just an inch or so of the stem sticking up so you can get a wrench/socket/whatever on it & for God's sakes don't torque it to WTF did someone say ?? 48 ftlbs ?? Thats fucking nuts, the drain plug gets more torque than the U bolts ?? Someone in japan needs to cut back on the saki, tooo drunk to make sound decisions.. Just make it good & snug & it'll be fine...

That damned allen key socket/bolt is a bitch. Monte just went thru this too. Here is his solution after he rounded the socket.

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
Had the same issue. I got an extra long hex wrench but still couldn't brake it. I put a whole can of compressed air on it, using the straw to apply inside the hex head and it popped right off.
    This ^

Carefull, they but a bittering agent in the can and if you breath in just a small amount, your mouth will taste like moldy dog shit for the rest of the day. Doesn't wash out.

I'd try welding a nut on before I drilled the thing out. I've seen others do that too.

Good luck however you do it.

yeah, last time I changed out the diff fluid, I torqued the drain to the same as the fill, 29 lb-ft. No leaks. No clue why they specify so high.

That sucks my plugs were tight as shit due to previous owner never servicing the differentials. The cold thing works good I use it a lot at work.

Hey Doug,I can make you feel better kinda. Murphy lives at my house. Wind yesterday broke off a large branch and stuck it threw the roof and drywall in my 22 foot cathedral ceiling. Damn tree was 45 feet from house. Okay, I'm a carpenter so I can fix the whole fuckin mess. Go to change oil in tacoma, filter won't come off nicely. Over pass tire with giant pair of channel locks. Only crushes. Finally take screwdriver and drive threw filter and get off. Oil all over shop floor from puncture. Go to put new filter on some dickhead switched in box. Feels like monday! All this fun, and no work also. Have a good day. If you ever see murphy, please let him stay at your house. Oh yeah, homeowners deductible to high to collect! haha
