There are some pool guys on here that have helped me before so here it goes:

I need to replace my light in my in ground pool. It was a 500 watt (BR40 I believe) pool light. Is there any reason why I cannot buy a BR40 LED bulb from home depot and put it in there, or are pool lights special made?

I have found pool light LEDs for $200 plus, where a normal LED is closer to 30. Is it marketing or do I need these special pool LEDS.

    Old bulb:

pool looks good, not sure whats going on the lower left of the picture tho haha.

I'm going to go to Leslie pool supply tomorrow to see what they have, but I have a feeling they are going to charge an arm and a leg for a light bulb.

My main concern is safety, do pool light bulbs have anything built in that makes them safer for pool use? My light has a gfi on it as well.

So I went to my local pool store, they had a color changing led light for...$300!

He said I could put a normal LED in there but it may burn out sooner due to temp differential and may not be as bright. I don't think the temp diferential will be much different than in an outdoor application, therefore my search continues for a bright affordable LED light. Any suggestions?

Also any harm in leaving the pool light housing out of the pool until i find a bulb?

I'm shocked there isn't a bigger market for this. Best I could do is a 36 watt LED, 2500 lumens, which is about half of the old 500 watt light bulb, but at a savings of 6-10 cents an hour, and its alot brighter than no light bulb. Hopefully it gets here soon.

My order got cancelled as they don't stock that bulb and want me to order 4 bulbs at $50 a pop. Open to suggestions again.
