So I finally got the balls to disassemble these projectors. I've got them all the way apart and have already painted a couple pieces. The only thing I haven't messed with yet is the spring/shield. I don't see how any harm could come from painting the one side of it. Just wanted to ask the gurus first. Here are some pics.

Well apparently people aren't too into taking these apart haha. I think I'm gonna play it safe and not worry about the shield. There's already so much red in there. For anyone else reading this looking to paint theirs... if I were to do it I would tape the top of the shield so no paint piles up on the part of the shield that shapes the cutoff. Gonna let the paint cure overnight before I reassemble them. So I might change my mind haha.

Yeah only found one thread on hidplanet.com about painting the shields. I'm not to overly worried about it. There's anyway so much red and the shield's tiny amount of silver

You can paint the shield as well if you prefer, but I would be sure to remove the paint from the top of the shield itself to ensure the cutoff remains crisp instead of blurred.

The shield just barely pops up above that other piece in my first post that's already red. The fogs I'm doing only have the one shield piece that's stationary. MUCH simpler than the fxr. Ah fuck it. Think I'm gonna paint the fxr shield today. Lots of people over on hidplanet.com talk about baking the paint it. Guess I'll do that too. Any recommendations on what temp and how long? As far as the shield goes on the fxr it's sooooooo thin and flimsy and basically scary as fuck to handle. Not sure yet if I'll try taping it or spraying from the bottom as to not affect the top edge. But basically paint on the edge is a no no.

So EVERYTHING is finally painted haha. Just one more question... I keep reading on hidplanet.com about certain colors on the bulb side of the shield affecting output color and what not. What do ya'll think of the inside of this? Think this light shade of red will affect the output AT ALL?

Shouldn't. Did you remove your lens and paint just inside of there?

I COMPLETELY disassembled them. All back together now. Guess it's time for a couple more pics.

That projector pic is just with the camera flash. No other light or filter. This is what it looks like beyond the lens.

Looks good. I did practically the exact same thing with mine. Ended up having to sand a bit off of the bottom trapezoidal part of the shield, and the inside of the hole where that part pops out. The paint was making it stick and so the shield wouldn't pull back in the hole. Otherwise, everything but the solenoid, reflective bowl, and glass lens was painted. It's been over a month and everything is working perfectly.

When they said it might affect cutoff, they meant that the paint may gunk up on top of the shield and affect it that way. That's why some recommend not doing it, and others recommend a strip of tape across the top.

Haha thanks. Love that chair. I didn't paint that other piece with the hole in it. You really can't see that part from the front. That's all good to know though :) I tried taping the top but it's so thin and paint just pooled up under the tape. I just sprayed it from the bottom and then lightly sanded the top edge of the shield.
