Had a thrush welded put on with the exhaust dumped after the axle. After it rusted out I bought a OE replacement (Bosal I think, ~$100.)

My truck isn't fast, exhaust didn't do crap for the butt dyno, v6's aren't throaty v8s, stick with stock...imo.

+1 for Areo Turbine. I have had mine on for about 9 months. Love it. Deep at idle, throaty when you're on the skinny pedal, and not too loud when at cruising speed. I recommend the model with the resonator built in. Prevents it from sounding "ricey".

I can't believe the hate on for Flowmaster on this site. Mine sounds awesome! Especially with the supercharger :D. Don't let a few haters tell you what sounds best, try looking at CT4WD or on the Canadian Thread to see if you can find some trucks with after market exhausts you can listen to before you buy one.

As an aside, no muffler or exhaust is going to sound like a 70's V8 on these trucks. Period. Don't even try...

One thing you may want to consider, you will lose 10-15% milage and low end torque when you add a cat back exhaust and do nothing else. The 3.4 L and 4.0 L need sufficient back pressure, take away that back pressure and you'll gain a bit of high end power at the expense of mileage and low end torque. I don't have dyno numbers but my Edge Evolution showed me this after I put my flowmaster on when I was still naturally aspirated. I camped around on some forums and I'm not the only guy this happened to, it happens to almost all owners who put on a higher flow exhaust system. These motors are not big 90's american V8's with flow issues due to noise reduction, you will not see gains by putting in true duals cat back like you'd see with a similar age large block american V8. I REALLY suggest you put true duals out of your head, I think you'd lose to much torque under 2000 rpm. Your thinking V8 chevy with duals, not mid sized Tacoma. With any exhaust, the general thoughts I have are that you simply get a bit more sound (I like that), a trade off between low and high end power (I disliked that, trucks need low end torque to be trucks), and less milage (I really didn't like that), unless you supercharge. Once I put on my TRD supercharger I got amazing sound (the truck sounds throaty, not high pitched), I have a better powerband both high and low (check out some threads, almost universal acclaim for CAI and exhaust systems on S/C motors), and better milage than with the exhaust on a stock system (one word, bitchin!)

So I would recommend no exhaust changes, at least not if the rest of the motor is staying stock. With some tuning, maybe a set of headers, or even better yet forced induction you'll be much happier with you new exhaust.

Magnaflow Part No 15811, cat-back bolt on kit. Takes maybe an hour to install.

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/1st-gen-builds/259729-tomtoms-03-trd-xtra-cab.html#post6330159

Sounds better than most I've heard. A little darker but gets a bit noisy when getting on the gas. The nice thing is it reroutes the pipe between the leaf pack and the frame which helps when lifting the rear.

I had a Borla on my XJ 4.0l and miss the sound. I would've bought one but they didn't offer a bolt on kit.

Isn't Borla the exhaust that comes stock on TRD models?

Or is this another case of "Bilstein" TRD shocks versus real Bilstein shocks?

I have a flowmaster 40 series on my 4 cylinder and I love the way it sounds, or should I say sounded, I has rusted out at the welds and some of the baffles have rusted out. The woman I bought it from had it put on in 09 and I bought it in 2010, at the beginning of December it started making a loud vibrating sound that sounds like you have 25 cans tied under it when I drive. If you drive over 55 often I would not get a 40 series because the drone is so loud around 70mph it is impossible to have a conversation without yelling. I plan to use one again when I have my header put on.

No sir. There was nothing special about the TRD model stock muffler. There are the TRD mufflers that could be bought after-the-fact at the dealer but I do not know who produced them. They didn't have the oval shape of a Borla.

Im intrested in this as i need to replace my stock muffler and i am looking to put a ford f-150 tank right where the muffler is so i need something compact to go under the truck. The tail pipe is hacked off right at the back of the muffler as my shocks got in the way of the tail pipe. So what is a small muffler that is quiet? I dont care about engine sounds as long as its as quiet as stock.

I'm with you. I went Flowmaster after having a Gibson. Flowmaster hands down!
Another good part is Flowmaster is just baffles so there is no break in and changing of sound as materials break down and compact as many other mufflers.

I love my flowmaster, I've been told my 2.7 sounds like a 350 at idle, and I love the way it gurgles and pops when I let off going down hill, not any more because it rotted out. When I get my header installed I am going to use another one.

it's not hating if it's the truth! i shot this the day i put it on. at idle and under 2k rpm it sounds fine..anything higher and it sounds like a fart can. it sounds totally different when in gear. i just couldn't stand it so i went back to stock.

The only bad thing about flowmasters is they're known to rust out kind of quick

Next time don't buy a four banger, as stated above :D. Straight fours don't belong in trucks IMHO. Throw some weight in there and the motors screaming.

Nah I can see a reason for a 4cyl with a manual trans. That truck gets great mpg from the factory
