My stock exhaust has a rust hole in it and will not pass inspection. They said toyotas exhaust was one hole piece so they could cut the rusty part out and replace it. Would cost $270

I said no thanks. Now if I didn't need a state inspection I wouldn't bother to fix it. I rarely drive the truck use it mostly in the winter. You can barely hear that the exhaust has a hole in it.

I do plan on keeping the truck for a long time so would it be better just to replace the hole thing? If so how much is the stock vs aftermarket prices?

I haven't been under it yet to see where the leak is.

    It's a 97 reg cab V6 120k miles.

My home state (NC,) won't allow you to patch a leaky exhaust. But it sounds like the quote you got was for the pipe all the way back. Not just the muffler. 20 min job to cut the old off and weld on a new muffler.

Why just cut it off though?

I have seen some mufflers that come with the part that go back to the catalytic converter and it looks like it disconnects there.

Does it matter what muffler replaces it?

Does $270 sound like a lot?

What would the dealer do about it? I'm just wondering.

    Thanks for the help!!

cut it off and just get a new muffler -> back and use a band clamp to connect to the old pipe. min'e been fine for years (I got a quiet muffler)

I'm pretty sure that's what they wanted to do the part was $112 and labor was $100 and something.
