Have they diagnosed the hu yet? Mine does it randomly (maybe once a month?). Someone else was complaining about the ac, too. I rarely need to have mine past the second notch.

That sucks. I once had the same assumption you did due to my past experiences with old Toyota pick ups. Sadly Toyota quality is not as good as it once was. I wish I could tell you it was an indestructible truck but they are not. After 10 years of production they should be rock solid, but bean counters are always finding new ways to "improve margins".

Anything mechanical / electrical can and will sometimes break. Happens. Take it in for a warranty. Those should be easy fixes. It's frustrating I understand but not the end of the world.

My ECM went bad the day after I drove it home.

They fixed it, and corporate gave me an extended warranty for free. They may not all be perfect, but Toyota will stand behind it. That's all you can ask for really.

I thought the same when I bought a 2011 Ford Ranger new at the tail end of 2010. I figured since it had been mostly unchanged for almost TWO decades, the last model year 2011 should have been bomb-proof. Wrong that truck, while got outstanding mpgs 28-30 (from the 2.3) was otherwise the biggest POS I've ever owned. Ford actually bought it back, and sold me an F-150 at an Employee rate.

Anyway, I once read on another brands forum, that some manufacture insiders believe that the manufacture "cheapens" the vehicle as oppose to making it better near the end of production to tighten their profit margins. One member hinted that they almost over build, or over engineer the first year or two of production, fix minor flaws in the third and fourth, and cost cut the last two or three and rake in the profit.

To be honest though, I have a 2010, V6 and 2014, 2.7 Tacoma's. My 2010 kind of "feels cheap" while my 2014 feels like I would imagine a Toyota to feel "drum tight".

The 2010 V6 ticks & clicks (but I hear that's normal) the rear factory springs are weak and soft for a V6 model. My 2014 has the tiny 4 cylinder, but can hold much more weight before the bed sags. The brake pedal feel on my 2010 is horrible, the 2014 is perfect.

My 2010's HVAC fan sounds like a hamster is using it as an exercise wheel, I wont even start on the burnt & melted DRL's on the truck as well. Again, with all that said I still love the 2010 for what it is, and what I need it to do. I am however 100% satisfied and impressed with my 2014 though.

Shit happens. People make mistakes, including Toyota employees and their vendors.
No supplier provides 100% fault-free parts.
Normally, the bad ones are caught before they go out the door.
Your truck apparently got some that slipped through.
Take it to the dealer and ask them to fix it and it'll be taken care of.

My word, all the fuss when the fix is free... Buy a GM product and you can die from that car company's faults!

What fuss? Op's pissed his brand new trucks falling apart. I would be pissed off as well.

Stalking TW over the past 7 years I have noticed less major issues like engine mounts imploding and more small issues like electrical issues and poor quality small parts. I guess thats a good trend, but it seems more people are having these small issues.....maybe the sales are up and so are the reported issues :notsure: I have no clue.

I would be hesitant to say overall quality is up from what I see here.

Everything is not made like it used to be. Remember when a washing machine would last 20+ years? Now that technology has taken a leap and people want newer, cheaper, more advanced, better, faster, etc. something has to give. A vehicle has thousands of individual parts. Unfortunately the odds are favorable there will be problems.

Comparing a Toyota 20 years ago with one today is crazy. The same can be said comparing a GE washing machine that I had 20 years ago that had 4 cycles and a turn dial with my GE front load with smart wash and data cable hook up to the dryer to transfer the proper drying cycle when the clothes are done being washed.

Also keep in mind that of the millions of vehicles sold, only a few thousand owners seek out these forums.
Of those who seek out the forums, there are two types... one who is an enthusiast and hooks up with one or more forums for any vehicle he owns (that's the majority of the active members), and the one who posts on a forum for help with a problem (the majority of members with only a few posts, but typically not the lurkers or 1-5 post people).

There is a reason that anecdotal evidence is not admissible in court. Postings on forums are not subject to duplication controls (one person can create multiple accounts until they get caught), accuracy controls (reported issue may be caused by the owner's actions), nor are they a statistically significant percentage of owners.

And this doesn't just apply to Toyota... it applies to every manufacturer of every product.
Sometimes you see what seems to be a trend among one manufacturer but not others... such as issues with Glock handguns... but then looking at the big picture, the forum might be made up of more Glock owners than any other individual brand. Things that are popular tend to also appear to be overrepresented in problem reports, when the simple fact is that greater sales means that they MAY actually have a lower percentage failure rate, but report higher individual numbers....

    Extreme example using made-up numbers....
GM reported 20 unsatisfied Volt owners. Ford reported 500 unsatisfied Fusion owners.
Is Volt a better car? Not when GM only sold 50 of them compared to 50,000 Fusions.

And back on the forum... 100 of those 500 are going to look for help on a forum. The vast majority of the 50,000 are not.
So yes, problems reported on forums are under-reported... there are more owners who do not post (or who do not post here), but at the same time, the relative lack of "happy" customers skews the perception of how widespread issues are.

How many times do we see a "new" problem reported and there is no followup. A year later, someone asks, and the OP supplies some BS answer... but still has the same vehicle and doesn't seem to have the problem anymore.

TW has 88,000 registered members (not including the banned).
About 60,000 have fewer than 10 posts (and interestingly, only about 1300 have more than 1000), on a forum that has been around since 2006.
