I've checked out your thread before. My only reasoning for 0-60 was to avoid needing to drive overly fast on public roads

Normal cruise control for Cali peeps. ;)

I hear you though. Hard to find deserted private roads anywhere these days.

I'm from Kansas, so finding a stretch of open roads isn't a problem. I just thought it would be best to limit the speed some. I agree that a 40-90 would probably be more accurate, but I wouldn't take any of these numbers to be concrete.

It's not a problem findin' a stretch...it's those pretty lights in the rear view that ruins it....

A much better launch and about 20 degrees cooler netted me a 7.56. Better than I figured I would get.

I actually drive it like an old man....then again I'm over 50. If I want to go FAST I bring out my Z06 Vette from the garage. No sudden starts, keep it between 60-65 on the highway, drive it round trip 74 miles a day -- all highway. I try REALLY HARD to keep the under powered V6 from gear searching even on the smallest of grades. If it is on "cruise control" it gear searches CONSTANTLY and punches the pedal - again even on the smallest grade. So pissed.

I know these thing are thirsty, I've had 7 of them since they became "Tacoma". I drive my wife's 2014 4x4 4 Runner SR5 Premium and I consistently get 22 Highway on the same route. I just checked my MPG for the period 7/20 - 7/28. ODO from 5121 to 5366. total gallons, 16.4. That's 14.3mpg highway in Phoenix Arizona, nice and flat most of the way. My fuel costs this month on this vehicle are $346.00. Added to the car payment, it is ridiculous.

No - I do not punch it, I do not try to pass everybody, and I try really hard to keep it simple. It's a truck, not my Corvette. But the MPG is sad. Toyota techs tell me I am not imagining this, they are getting their fair share of these complaints. In actuality, they have told me throughout this month they are seeing customers install the TRD Supercharger to increase the torque on these pigs and they are INCREASING their gas mileage. I'll be damned to spend 5K over and above for Toyota's lack of R&D.

A 4.0 with this sad HP and Torque mated to a full frame truck? Reminds me of the T-100 days when they tried to get away with it. I say they need to step up their game on getting more power out of this relatively large displacement V6 before they are passed by completely. They look good, but they cannot get out of their own way. There are automakers out there getting a hell of a lot more HP and Torque out of V6 engines with much better MPG.

Ordered a V6 sports car to replace it yesterday. Bought it for $30K and it has 378 HP, 390 Torque and a 0-60 in 4.8 seconds. Yeah, a 3.8 displacement V6 and an eight speed automatic... Why the hell cannot Toyota come up with this kind of R&D instead of getting comfy ? Remember the Supra Turbo? NICE. Then it was GONE from the lineup to put grandpa in the Camry and Avalon, sissy and little bobby in a Scion. R & D ?? Not showing any muscle in that department, more like RESTRAINT. The 4.0 has been under-powered for many, many years.

At least on the 4Runner the gearing allows for less gear searching due to lack of power, and better gas mileage - same engine. Handling sucks on that vehicle unless you install Bilstein's all the way around. The 4Runner can be outright dangerous on the highway, and stopping anywhere at any speed tends to make the front end take a huge nosedive. Garbage shocks on that thing for that "fluffy" ride....I tore them off and my wife really loves the fact the vehicle no longer handles like an aircraft carrier.

With only 236 HP it is falling behind, seriously behind, in the rear view mirrors of it's competition. Time to get rid of mine before word gets around too much to stay away. I've chatted with owners of the new Tacoma, and it seems the least happy are the double cab 4x4 guys like me. The Pre-runner does in fact get better numbers.

26 days and counting...... sorry to say. They are good looking trucks, the best looking in their class, but you need to bolt on the TRD supercharger to get close to the competition. And that's another $5K, now your in V8 country. But you can BUY a V8 for less money, better performance, and less cash spent on fuel. I wonder if they will ever boost the power or just replace the power plant altogether with something of a new design, for the old one is stale.

Damn, I wish it were different. But, this thing is burning through cash like an old muscle car - and it is nowhere near that number on the fun meter.

I guess I'm a little confused by all of this. You've had 7 Tacoma's yet you continue to buy them when they continue to disappoint you. You constantly compare them to sports cars and v8 trucks when those aren't the Tacoma's competition. The only two trucks you can really directly compare the Tacoma to right now is the Frontier and Ridgeline, and neither of them have much better power or mpg. The Tacoma is a 10 year old design, and yes in 10 years they have increased power and fuel economy.

The 4runner has the same gear ratio and transmission as the automatic Tacoma, but the engine is not the same. I'm guessing your fuel economy issue is related to your enjoyment of driving pretty fast. I average almost 20 mpg highway, not great but not terrible.

I also will not claim to know all cars, but I don't know of any car you can buy with a 3.8 v6 and makes 378 hp new for $30k. Which if we are going to start comparing used sports cars to a Tacoma, then this is ridiculous. I think you should figure out what kind of vehicle you are looking for and just buy that, because as much as you mention performance the Tacoma isn't probably for you. I do agree the Tacoma could use an updated power-train, but It's not that far off from the rest of the pack for being as old as it is.

Dang, cactuseater has a Vette and a 390hp sports car, and he's complaining about the fuel cost of his Taco? I don't think I've ever smelled a larger pile of bullshit in my life.

7 Tacomas..and a garage full of Horsepower, and you spent 23 minutes of your time typing out an essay on Toyotas R&D lack of ingenuity instead of burning up a few tankfuls of Premium in the crotch-rockets....seems to me, you are either one of those people who are never happy, and like to complain to see attention....OR.... you just hit your middle-aged crisis...Is it true what they say about older men who drive Corvettes.. #LittleWeiner.....just wonderin'' :D

Agreed. Please do go buy this sports car you "ordered." We won't miss you. Claiming to have had 7 Tacomas, but can't stand the MPG. I don't think the MPG has changed much over the years in these trucks. If you truly did have 7, then you should know what MPG to expect and the power they come with. Please do us the favor of trading it in.
