I shall do it then. That and the hatchet they make. Was looking at austine but saw some sketchy review videos with the heads coming loose very quickly. Shouldnt happen on a 500 dollar axe.

    no kidding?

not so sure i could own a custom axe. not for $500./

i have the small forest axe and a wetterlings hatchet. both pretty much will shave my legs. i wouldnt buy that sharpening puck thing. better ways to spend the $50ish. i heard the new ones are not like the old ones anyways.

I prefer the wood splitter and chainsaw brand lol. Only thing we use is a hatchet for marking where to buck logs. We split over 200 pickup loads of wood and a few tandem loads a year tho

I agree with the chain saw and splitter, our main tools are the Stihl MS290 Farm Boss and the 30 ton hydraulic splitter. We do maintain our tools on a 8" low speed grinder with the white wheels also...and some cheap steels just won't hold an edge. There is one cheap hatchet we keep on the porch just to chop ice for the animals.

If your doing quantity. I get it. Chainsaw and mechanized splitter.

Nothing cooler than an axe for small jobs.

Axes are for cutting down trees and de-limbing

A maul is for splitting firewood

I always buy the best tool I can afford , but for some reason I can't see how a maul is a tool that you need to spend a crap load of money on , it's not like it needs to hold an edge

Oz. What kinda framing hammer do you have? Just curious. The amount of cash folks spend on hammers stun me.

Smooth face for framing? Why not two hammers?

TruTemper maul and sledge, no-name hatchet that lives under the back seat and a double-bitted axe I found laying in the weeds while camping a while back. Burned the rotten handle in the campfire, brought the head home and knocked the rust off with a Dremel then shot a bit of paint on it. New $8 handle and good to go. All of these tools work flawlessly and I probably have around $80 in the lot. I also only buy mauls with fiberglass or composite handles because I've been known to swing a bit wild with a sledge and I end up destroying wooden handles on them.

To the original question, I use a flat file and Dremel (major nicks/chunks) for sharpening.

Rather have a wood handle myself , and I leave my axe and maul out in the woodshed all year

The no-name is the same one I keep on the back porch to chop ice in the dog water bucket in the winter...I think it is either Northern Tool or HF, and it keeps a lousy edge.

As for FB or wood, I tend to get FB for the mauls, but most everything else gets replaced with the $5 wood handles from the flea market.
