Pulled the trigger on a 2000 Tacoma 2dr. 4cly for a work truck with the ending it will be passed to my son next year for his first truck... Needless to say he is a super exicted 16yr old.. Im just happy to get a few miles off my truck and save a little gas for a while..

The truck is in really good shape, 1 owner, 140kmiles. Everything was serviced and is in working condition..

I will be changing front struts and rear shocks, being they are original.

Any help or tips on this little truck? Its my first Toyoda.

Nice to see a fellow Louisianian. Pretty much just keep up with your maintenance and you should be golden. These are bulletproof trucks. Seen some last 600k+ miles on original engine and transmission.

Nice! I had a 2000 tacoma just like yours but white with the tan interior. My favorite Toyota! The 2.7 I4 is a great engine, the transmission was smooth and it was great off-road. Easy to turn around, fit on any trail. I miss that truck. Black ice took it from me after 5 years of ownership. Plus, I think that particular year is the best looking tacoma ever...love the grill/front bumper with the body style. I'm envious of you and your son. Wash, wax, regular maintenance, enjoy.

I love it. I have a 2nd gen double-cab because it fits our 4 dogs better, but the 1st gen regular cabs are what really fill me with lust. Someday I will have one of each...

That is one nice looking rig. I bought a 2000 with 133k last December and its in great shape. For 5 grand. My wife's uncle has said many times now he wished he wouldn't have sold it. I wouldn't take 10 for it. I love the little truck.

Looks good! Not sure about that year or model of Tacoma, but I've heard many reports of the OEM Leaf Springs having serious issues. Might want to crawl under there a take a peek at them, and make sure they're not cracked. You're probably fine, but if you ever decide to go with new leafs, aftermarket is the way to go. My truck has 5 leafs on it instead of the original 3 leaf system. (I think it's 3).

Nice clean truck, and with stock alloys, as well.

One suggestion, is to check the valve clearances (easy to do with regular tools). If they are too tight, you may develop burnt exhaust valves down the road. Adjustment is another story, difficult and requires a special tool. I consider myself a decent hobbyist/mechanic and couldn't do it, even with the special tool.

Adjustment by a reputable shop, however, is around $500.
But to repair burnt valves is in the thousands.

Ok guys.. So I changed out the whole strut assembly last night.. shock, spring, bushing, and ball joints.. Im about 2" higher in the front now due to leaf spring sag.. 15year old truck I guess time has took it toll.. NO cracks in the leafs springs after inspection, but deff a bit droopy... Rear shocks have also been changed to Rancho's.. I looked last night and again this morning for solution to the sag in the leaf springs.. Seems like Add a leaf is a good option (SkyJacker) I know everyone will have some info on diff options but I would like to hear reviews on Add a Leaf installs and how you like them..

    Any help would be great.

I just changed shocks and leafs in the back of my 02. The leafs were replaced in 2009 when the frame was replaced, yet they were already saggy when I purchased last fall. I got a deal on new OEM Toyota leafs (crappy but they were cheap) and I put an AAL in before install. I had bad axel wrap and in the interim I had clamped the leafs to the overload to help control the wrap. The point of all this is when I was removing my leafs - first unclamped, then began loosening the shackle pins, the shackles were frozen in place. When I loosened the bolts - just to check if I would have to cut them (its common) the shackle sprang back several inches - this happened both sides. So all this makes me wonder if my leafs were looking all saggy because the shackles weren't allowing necessary elongation of the leafs.

I already had all new hardware, so I swapped everything out anyway, but you might consider checking to be sure the shackles are working smoothly before touching the leafs.
