I currently have a Bakflip cover on my short bed and I love it but I need more room. The Bakflip doesn't allow for much storage but it is dry. I have a baby on the way so I need more dry storage. I was set on a ARE cap but I just don't want to drop the coin. I was looking at a softtopper, a bestop, or maybe even a roof rack. I would appreciate any input on any of those four options cause I only want to do once! And I do use the car wash a descent amount because of the NY winter salt and grime. Thanks

Well how big are these things you want to store? Strollers? Diaper bag, car seat? All this things fit under the bakflip. Campers you can find used on Craigslist.

What circumstances are we talking about here, I can't imagine a time when the tonneau wouldn't provide enough room.

Do you have any other kids? What are you planning on carrying around?

We also have a dog that takes up room so right now we get pretty close to full. The truck is only used for weekend traveling so it's not a daily driver.

A little of this and a little of that.
Another vote for a cap/topper. Good luck.

I was facing the same thing with my newborn boy and a big German Shepherd, that's why I sold the access cab, got a double cab, and just put the Softopper on it. The Softopper is sweet so far, keeps stuff dry, comes off easy, and built really well.

Find a used cap, that's what I did and after making several trips this summer with the wife, baby and our dogs I cannot imagine not having a cap now.

OT, but IIRC, my parents (I'm 36 Y/O) stuffed all of that crap into their '72 VW Beetle, Dad had a '77 Firebird Lol.

How the heck do we even raise kids anymore without Suburban's & Sequia's:rolleyes:

On a more serious note, my wife and I have a both a 5 year old, and 3 year old, at get by with everything the OP mentioned in his original post with a '14, Tacoma, DC & '13 Subaru Outback.

Did it already match that green? If so great find, I rarely see that color out here in California. Cute kids too!

For everyday use I will have no issues with my small work car. But for the often long trips I take, the bed is very shallow and it fills quickly. I guess the cap is the best option...thanks for everyones help.

I had a similar situation last year, dcsb and was traveling with a newborn and a full grown lab. I had an ARE MX series cap and that gave me plenty of room. I've since traded to a full size crew cab with a Bakflip tonneau and I believe I have more room now than I did with the Tacoma. If you're keeping the Tacoma, a cap is the way to go since it offers you lots of dry, lockable storage.

Wait and see how bad it i, but I think you will make out OK other than if you want to take a long vacation... and trust me you probably wont want to take a long vacation with a newborn.

We have twins and the worst in terms of carrying a lot of stuff was the first week long trip we took them on up to a vacation Condo in Bar Harbor when they where 2 years old. We had to bring

    Double stroller
2 pack and plays (use as travel cribs)
    2 travel high chairs
2 diaper bags with all the changing stuff (a weeks worth is a lot)

Plus all our luggage. We took our Honda Pilot SUV and with the 3rd row folded it was packed to the roof. I dont think it would fit in a short bed.

If its just you, your wife and one baby you might also stuff some luggage in the back seat on the other side....

This is the cheaper route I would take because of the easy access to the full bed for hauling. Having a growing little one will cause you to use your bed quite often that you can't haul with a camper on and a softopper gives you the best of both worlds. For me, the Bakflip serves my purpose for kiddy things like this:
