Hmmm, maybe i can go up a size with the firestik and move the toolbox a bit to put the antenna in the front rail centered. And also eventually upgrade the radio itself.

 

Jason - do you have a ground wire from the mount to frame? That could be part of your problem.

Mine being mounted on the tail is perfect, I don't have any issues sending/recieving...and my previous antenna was a 4 ft one from radio shack. I got a 3 ft firestik for free off a friend but haven't tested it out yet, but I think I'll end up getting another 4 ft and mount it on my BAMF mount

No, mine is a "no ground plane" antenna so i made sure to insulated between all the metal so it doesn't jump to ground.

 

Any large flat metal surface close to the antenna helps incoming pick up ..

 

precisely. it worked fine for me when we were wheeling, but after about a half mile of separation (easy to achieve doing 60 mph froup runs through Ocala), the quality degraded very quickly.

now i can get 4+ miles with mine in a city full of buildings, and farther when i'm on the open highway.

 

I'd like to be able to TX that far, my original setup was thrown together about 2 days before going to citrus lol. I just haven't gotten a proper setup on mine yet. Although I still will have it mounted on the tailgate both for looks and I haven't had any issues with it yet

that looks like a good setup, yes you need the spring, I didnt have one with my radioshack 4' and it snapped off at the last meet I went to. Doesnt seem like you are missing anything, just the mounting bracket for where ever you are gonna mount it

Sprayed a second coat before it gets supper hot outside. First time using a hvlp gun or anything other then a rattle bomb. What you guys think. I built it for my 14' sea nymph Jon boat.

 

When I could RX from over 5 miles away but could barely TX back at just over a mile on a rolling hill highway is when I decided I'd be going to a roof top setup. Makes all the difference when you're trying to catch back up to the pack.

Currently using a 3 foot firestik on top/front of my bed rack. Base of the antenna is about level with the third brake light, meaning that it's about equal to running a 5 footer from the bed rail. Also have it on a spring and quick release folding mount.

 

Got my cb all tuned up. Thanks for all the help. I regrounded the bracket and moved the power to my aux fuse box. I got them to about 1.3-1.5 range. I will retune when my spring arrives tomorrow
