1GR-FE Head Gasket Failing - Options

A compression test will tell you if your gasket is blown. Was this part of the "block test?" If compression is good, I would suspect a coil pack or ignition unit.

 

Finally received the news that it IS the head gasket. They caught me when I did not have a lot of time so I did not ask which test proved it.

 

I'm in the same situation right now :/

 

Why don't you try something simple like K Seal or Barrs first. If one of the add in sealants work you save yourself a ton of money and time

 

Those additive sealants are a tampon in a bullit hole type thing. Handy when in a bind but for sustained use no way. Plus if it's plugging a hole imagine what else it's sticking to..... No bueno my friend.

 

I used K-Seal on my old Subaru and have had no problems for years (still have the car). Plus, you have nothing to lose. If it works things are great, if not the $ 15 you spent on the sealant is nothing as you will be spending $ 1,500 on a complete repair.

 

Personally, I'd either fix it, then sell truck, or not fix and sell as-is, making new owner aware of problem before sale.

I picked up my truck last Saturday. Head gasket fixed. Total cost was just over $2600

Did the dealership perform the repair? Is the new gasket the better/redesigned version? Did they do a valve job or anything additional while cracked open? Does your truck get good gas mileage?

 

Damn. They pulled the engine to do a head gasket? From your pictures it looks a like they did a VERY Professional job of it.

 

I'm interested in if they replaced anything else while they were in there

 

I hope I am able to answer most of your questions.

I did take my truck to the dealership. I was sitting at my sons soccer practice talking to a couple other gear head dads about what to do and discussing the input all of you guys gave me.

Like it was divine intervention another dad showed up to get his son at the end of practice and was still wearing his mechanic uniform from the dealership. I knew from years ago he was a mechanic, but I had forgotten. Not only was he a mechanic, he was a Toyota mechanic and has been for the last 15+ years.

So the next day I took my truck to the dealership and instructed them that this particular mechanic was the only person that was to turn a wrench on my truck.

In light of us being "soccer friends" I think he did a little extra.

My understanding is that after cleaning the motor, taking it apart he also cleaned the carbon off the pistons, valves etc.

Replaced the following:
Rear Main Seal
Valve Seals
Belt
Of course oil change and coolant change.
New head gaskets (yes the new part number)

I will have to look at the paperwork to check everything again and then ask him what he did extra if anything that was not included on the paperwork.

I have not checked the mileage I am getting. Seems to run great.

 

Mileage will probably be off for a bit while the ecu relearns everything.

 

Thats a good price for having a dealer do it... he hooked you up quite a bit. I think that if you're quick at pulling engines it would make the job go alot easier.. Me ive never pulled a taco engine and I did the job in my garage so the engine stayed in.

I did all the same replacements you had on yours plus a few extra and i get 20 MPG (no exaggeration) with my stock wheels and tires. 18 MPG with my 20's and 33's.

Did you get the heads milled?
